Forest & Conservation Technician
Job Summary
Responsible for assisting scientists in the conservation of soil, water, forests, or related natural resources. Compiles data about forest tracts, performs research, and helps scientists manage and protect rangelands.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist scientists to conserve forests, rangelands, and forest tracts.
- Compile numerical data pertaining to size, content, condition, and other characteristics of forest tracts.
- Train and lead forest workers in forest propagation, fire prevention and suppression.
- Assist conservation scientists in managing, improving, and protecting rangelands and wildlife habitats.
- Cull data on water and soil quality, disease, and insect damage to trees and other plants.
- Take samples from soil and water.
- Identify insects or pestilence harming the forest.
- Identify other potential hazards, such as forest fires.
- Evaluate forested areas to determine the species, quality, and amount of standing timber.
- Identify property lines and mark properly.
- Patrol forest areas for dangers, hazards, and wildlife.
- Mark trees to be cut.
- Recommend fire control activities to smother forest fires.
- Train forestry workers about fire prevention and control methods.
- Communicate with the public about forest and conservation activities.
- Keep an eye on loggers and those who remove timber.
- Supervise workers who plant seedlings.
- Decide where and what kind of seedlings to plant.
- Gather data on conditions that may pose a fire hazard.
- Measure timber and supervise harvesting operations.
- Gather basic information, such as data on populations of trees, disease and insect damage, and tree seedling mortality.
