Job Description

The Irradiation Engineer designs, analyzes, and qualifies MURR's materials irradiation experiments, from sponsor requirements to an approved capsule in the core. The engineer owns the neutronics, nuclear heating, and thermal analysis that ensure each test meets its dose and temperature targets safely.

Essential duties (approximate effort)
* Neutronics and dose analysis (30%). Model irradiation positions with MCNP, SCALE, or similar codes to calculate flux, fluence, spectrum, dpa, and gamma and neutron heating. Calculate specimen activation and dose rates for handling, shipping, and PIE planning.
* Thermal and capsule design (30%). Design test capsules and rigs, including specimen holders, gas gaps, and materials, to hit target temperatures. Perform heat-transfer and finite-element thermal and structural analysis, and produce drawings and fabrication packages.
* Experiment execution and qualification (15%). Prepare experiment safety analyses for MURR review committees. Coordinate fabrication, insertion, monitoring, and removal with reactor operations, and plan dosimetry and temperature monitors to verify conditions.
* Sponsor and project development (15%). Translate industry and faculty test needs into irradiation conditions, schedules, and cost estimates. Contribute to proposals to DOE, NSUF, NEUP, and industry sponsors.
* Laboratory setup, safety, and other duties (10%). Help commission the materials laboratory, maintain design and analysis records under MURR's quality program, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Required qualifications
* BS in nuclear engineering or mechanical engineering.
* Coursework or experience in reactor physics or neutron transport, and in heat transfer.
* Working knowledge of MCNP and one thermal or finite-element tool (COMSOL).
