The College of Medicine - Phoenix (College) is seeking applications for a director of the MD/PhD Program. Applicants should be experienced clinician scientists with a strong track record of research, mentoring, and program leadership to direct, develop, and grow the current MD/PhD program. The medical school was established in 2007 in Phoenix as an independent four-year allopathic program. The MD/PhD track was launched in 2017 and has steadily grown to support students in a culture that promotes a collaborative and dynamic platform for medical education, biomedical research and clinical innovation. This growth parallels the College's expanding research portfolio. The program supports trainees pursuing rigorous dual-degree training across the translational spectrum. The program benefits from a highly collaborative tri-institutional environment, including the University of New Mexico and the University of Arizona programs (Colleges of Medicine in Phoenix and Tucson) as part of the Southwest Clinical and Translational Science Award (SW CACTI). This infrastructure allows students access to additional resources in clinical research design, regulatory science, biomedical informatics, community engagement, and mentorship networks. The College has extramural research funding during the previous five years to over $50 million, including $23 million in NIH funding. The director will provide leadership, oversight, and coordination of the overall program, including recruitment, admissions, orientation, course design, program evaluation, and financial management. The successful applicant will be a physician-scientist with a strong track record of excellence in teaching and research, including leadership in educational programs. They should have the ability to manage student portfolios and demonstrate longitudinal engagement and guidance between the MD and PhD program components. Outstanding communication skills and collaboration with other academic, research, and medical/biomedical programs across the campus will be integral to the program's continued success. The director's role will be up to 0.50 FTE. It is expected that the faculty will spend the other 0.50 FTE focused on other mission-based activities as determined by the Department of Basic Medical Sciences. The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, actively participate in research, teaching and/or clinical service, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor. The successful candidate will meet the requirements of tenure-track faculty according to the College and University guidelines.
