The Information Technology function is responsible for managing and overseeing the technology infrastructure that that supports the organization's operations. This includes the maintenance of hardware, software, networks, databases, and communication systems; ensuring that these systems are secure, efficient, and capable of supporting business objectives. Key responsibility areas include infrastructure management, software and systems maintenance and development, data management and security, technical support, and strategic planning and innovation.

We are seeking a motivated and analytical Data Science Intern to join our team for the Fall 2026 internship program. This internship provides an opportunity to work on a strategic initiative focused on understanding how healthcare providers and staff interact with Availity's products and services.

The selected intern will work alongside another Data Science Intern in a collaborative, pair-programming environment to help build a more comprehensive understanding of user behavior across Availity platforms. Together, the interns will analyze user activity from multiple systems and contribute to the development of a unified user profile framework that helps answer a critical business question:

How are users interacting with Availity, and how can we better serve them?

This role offers exposure to healthcare technology, analytics engineering, user behavior analysis, machine learning, and conversational AI while working on projects with direct business impact.

Internship Project

One of Availity's strategic goals is to develop a more robust understanding of our users by integrating data from multiple sources into a consolidated view of user activity and engagement.

Interns will work together to help establish the foundation for a comprehensive user fact table that combines data from platforms such as:

  • Ask Avary conversational AI
  • Salesforce
  • Portal activity data
  • Product usage metrics
  • Dimensional reference tables
  • Additional internal data sources

The objective is to create meaningful user profiles that help identify how different types of users engage with Availity products and services.

Ask Avary Focus Area

The Ask Avary intern will:

  • Analyze chatbot conversation and usage data.
  • Identify common user questions, workflows, and usage patterns.
  • Develop user segments based on conversational behavior.
  • Evaluate how different user groups leverage AI-powered assistance.
  • Generate insights that can improve documentation, user experience, and product strategy.
  • Build analytical datasets that connect user activity across products.
  • Explore similarities and differences among user populations.
  • Develop user personas and behavioral segments.
  • Present recommendations that advance Availity's understanding of user engagement across the platform.
  • Deliver a foundational framework that future teams can build upon to better understand customer behavior.

To Be Qualified for the Role

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, Analytics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with Python and common analytics libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib, or Scikit-learn.
  • Familiarity with SQL and working with structured datasets.
  • Understanding of statistics and data analysis fundamentals.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts and findings clearly.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn.
  • Strong critical-thinking skills and the ability to solve ambiguous business problems.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Analyze large-scale user interaction datasets.
  • Build and maintain analytical workflows using Python and SQL.
  • Work with multiple internal data sources to develop unified user profiles.
  • Create reports, dashboards, and visualizations for business stakeholders.
  • Partner with Data Science, Product, Engineering, and Business teams.
  • Apply statistical techniques to uncover trends and actionable insights.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.
  • Present findings to leadership and stakeholders throughout the internship.
  • Contribute code, documentation, and reusable analytical assets that support future work.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Experience with analytics, machine learning, or data engineering projects.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Databricks, Athena, Redshift, or cloud analytics platforms.
  • Experience with customer analytics, behavioral analysis, or user segmentation.
  • Exposure to conversational AI, natural language processing, or generative AI technologies.
  • Knowledge of experimentation methodologies, A/B testing, or statistical inference.
  • Interest in healthcare technology and digital transformation.

By the end of the internship, participants will have contributed to a foundational understanding of user behavior across Availity products and helped establish a framework for future customer analytics initiatives.

Video Camera Usage:

Availity fosters a collaborative and open culture where communication and engagement are central to our success. As a remote first company, we are also camera-first and provide all associates with camera/video capability to simulate the office environment. If you are not able to use your camera for all virtual meetings, you should not apply for this role.

Having cameras on helps create a more connected, interactive, and productive environment, allowing teams to communicate more effectively and build stronger working relationships. The usage of cameras also enhances security and protects sensitive company information. Video participation is required to ensure that only authorized personnel are present in meetings and to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, preventing social engineering, or the sharing of confidential information with non-participants.
