Job Title: Department Safety Advisor

Location(s): San Francisco, CA

Position Overview
The Department Safety Advisor (DSA) coordinates environmental health and safety activities within assigned departments and works closely with researchers, principal investigators, laboratory supervisors, managers, facilities personnel, and project managers.

The DSA is responsible for promoting regulatory compliance and maintaining a safe work environment across laboratory, administrative, and facilities operations. The position provides guidance on environmental health and safety requirements and supports the development and implementation of programs designed to improve workplace health and safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate department-level environmental health and safety activities.
  • Work closely with researchers, principal investigators, laboratory supervisors, department managers, facilities management, and project managers.
  • Provide guidance regarding applicable federal, state, and local regulations, codes, standards, and ordinances.
  • Monitor activities involving hazardous materials to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Consult on the design of experiments, laboratories, facilities, and work processes from an environmental health and safety perspective.
  • Promote and maintain a safe work environment across administrative departments and facilities management operations.
  • Support fire and life safety initiatives.
  • Address ergonomics and workplace injury-prevention requirements.
  • Participate in accident and incident investigations.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of health and safety programs.
  • Complete safety-related projects and initiatives designed to improve workplace safety.
  • Support the Technical Safety Committee and Safety Officers with development and review of safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the review of use authorizations related to the safe handling and use of hazardous materials.
  • Provide ongoing consultation and technical support regarding environmental health and safety matters.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health & Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in an Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) role.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations, codes, standards, and ordinances.
  • Experience working with researchers, laboratory personnel, facilities teams, and project managers.
  • Experience working with hazardous materials and laboratory or institutional safety programs.
  • Strong communication, consultation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work onsite Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM.
  • Ability to travel between various campus locations as required.

Additional Information

  • Travel: Must be able to travel to various campus locations; shuttle transportation is available.
  • Duration: Contract with potential for permanent conversion.
  • Conversion: Possible for the right candidate.
