Min T/E Requirements
* Master's degree from an accredited institution in higher education, educational leadership, business administration, public administration, or a related field required; earned doctorate preferred
* Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education administration, academic affairs, institutional operations, or related leadership roles
* Demonstrated experience supporting senior academic leadership, strategic initiatives, institutional operations, or divisional administration within a complex higher education environment
* Proven ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and demonstrate discretion in decision making and management of sensitive institutional matters
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a complex organizational structure while managing multiple priorities, initiatives, and competing deadlines simultaneously
* Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, writing, and verbal communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to prepare executive reports, strategic analyses, institutional communications, presentations, and operational updates for senior leadership and external stakeholders
* Demonstrated ability to think strategically while supporting implementation and operational execution of institutional priorities and divisional initiatives
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with university administrators, faculty, staff, governmental agencies, and external partners
* Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen to differing perspectives, facilitate collaboration, and develop effective solutions that support the long-term interests of the University
* Demonstrated knowledge of university policies, procedures, organizational operations, and shared governance processes within higher education
* Demonstrated experience supporting operational planning, policy implementation, strategic initiatives, institutional reporting, or administrative coordination within Academic Affairs or a comparable division

Primary Purpose of Organization Unit
The Office of the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic and operational division of the University and is responsible for leadership, oversight, coordination, review, and administration of all academic programs, academic policies, faculty affairs, strategic academic initiatives, institutional planning, and academic operations.
The Office provides leadership for the University's colleges and schools and coordinates division-wide planning, budgeting, assessment, reporting, policy implementation, institutional effectiveness, accreditation support, academic business operations, and strategic initiatives in alignment with institutional priorities and UNC System Office requirements.
The Office of the Provost also oversees academic operational support units including institutional research, planning and accreditation, sponsored research, libraries, student success and graduate education while supporting strategic academic growth, operational effectiveness, and institutional accountability.


Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting directly to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the Deputy Provost serves as the chief operational and strategic support officer for the Division of Academic Affairs and as a senior advisor and trusted partner to the Provost. The Deputy Provost supports the advancement of academic and institutional priorities by facilitating coordination, communication, implementation, and operational alignment across the units reporting to the Provost.
The Deputy Provost provides leadership for divisional strategic planning, operational management, academic business processes, policy oversight, institutional reporting, and coordination of initiatives associated with the University's Academic Strategic Plan. Acting with delegated authority on behalf of the Provost, the Deputy Provost works closely with Associate Vice Chancellors, Deans, department chairs, directors, and university leadership to ensure effective implementation of divisional priorities, operational initiatives, and institutional objectives across Academic Affairs.
The Deputy Provost serves as a primary liaison between Academic Affairs and the UNC System Office and is responsible for coordinating, reviewing, preparing, and communicating reports, operational updates, policy materials, and strategic initiatives associated with state, federal, and UNC System requirements. The position also supports institutional planning, operational assessment, accreditation activities, and policy implementation efforts within the division.
The Deputy Provost supports divisional advancement efforts through the cultivation of strategic partnerships, external funding opportunities, grants, and sponsored initiatives that advance academic priorities, faculty support, research capacity, institutional operations, and strategic growth initiatives.
The Deputy Provost plays a critical role in ensuring that the work of the Office of the Provost is coordinated, responsive, strategically aligned, and operationally effective. The position requires sound judgment, discretion, political acuity, and the ability to navigate a complex academic environment while managing multiple high-level initiatives and institutional priorities simultaneously.
The Deputy Provost serves as designee for the Provost as appropriate and provides leadership and continuity for Academic Affairs operations in the absence of the Provost.

This position is Mandatory Personnel: Employees whose presence has been determined to be mandatory to University operations during certain types of adverse weather or emergency events.
Management Preference

  • Proficiency in and proponent of data-based decision-making is preferred. Experience in data collection, data-sharing, reporting, and progress reports is preferred. The ability to use data and data analytic tools to guide institutional and program effectiveness and monitor progress relative to specific annual and long-term goals is preferred. The ability to effectively communicate results of institutional assessment to constituencies and provide recommendations to achieve and exceed strategic goals is preferred.
  • Track record of successfully integrating strategic activities across the division, institution, and community around a shared vision for success
  • Successful experience in university advancement and fundraising
  • Experience in developing external partnerships that further develop a higher education institution and the surrounding region

  • Understands the key social, political, economic, and technological changes affecting higher education and brings creativity and vision to ensure that the University of North Carolina at Pembroke sustains/furthers its academic reputation and national leadership in the higher education community as well as with respect to social mobility
  • Regular, non-disruptive, and reliable attendance is required, as well as the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious, and professional working relationships with others.
