Associate Computational Scientist

The Jackson Laboratory
10 Discovery Drive (Show on map)
Jul 23, 2026

Associate Computational Scientists, under the supervision of either a senior level (Sr to Principal) scientist or one of the Director/Associate Director/Manager in Computational Sciences, participate in the collaborative bioinformatics program aligned with institutional strategy and direction and make leading contributions to the cutting edge projects at The Jackson Laboratory. Associate Computational Scientists will closely work with the research faculty & genetic resource scientists across all three campuses of The JAX on projects of wide ranging complexity from a diverse array of biomedical disciplines such as cancer biology, ageing, immunology, infectious diseases, metabolomics, neural disorders, muscular disorders, Biostatistics & Statistical Genetics, and stem cell & developmental biology. They may also work with The JAX Mice & Services staff and Scientific Services to meet the analytical needs of The JAX's Services, clients and partners. In addition, an Associate Computational Scientist may participate in all CS departmental activities and collaborations as assigned by the supervisor or Associate Director or Director of the group to the extent assigned. They include, not limited to, helping interns, post-doctoral fellows & scientists, grant writing and possibly CS Helpdesk. Successful candidates will have in-depth knowledge and experience in some or all of the following: High Throughput Sequence (HTS) data analysis (DNA Seq, mRNA Seq, ChIP Seq, micro RNA Seq etc), microarray data analysis, high content imaging (HCI) data analysis, experimental design, data integration, algorithm development, development of sequence analysis tools (bioinformatics programming), evaluation of analytical tools and technology, and delivering training to the research community. They are continuous learners and proactive contributors. Furthermore, they will present the results to The JAX community, at conferences and workshops. Associate Computational Scientist exhibits increased ability to work independently, development of in-depth knowledge in selected biological disciplines to analyze and provide expert reasoning to the relevant projects. Provide overall project leadership that includes, not limited to, project management, logistics management, scope definition and collaboration management. Make leading contributions to grant applications. The candidates with proven track record of "omics" data or image analysis, independent collaborative work and leading contributions to a biological discipline would be preferred. They may sustain collaborations with The JAX research staff and faculty on all campuses and may visit the other sites of JAX as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Associate Computational Scientist performs, under minimal supervision, tasks such as Computational analysis of omics data, algorithm development and implementation, as well as bioinformatics programming. May evaluate data for quality assurance and mining bioinformatics databases. Results may be presented at international conferences and workshops. Contributing to the education and training courses conducted by CS and The JAX for internal as well as external communities. (60-70%)
  • Associate Computational Scientist starts demonstrating strong potential to develop analytical expertise to a few selected biological disciplines, independent collaboration and project leadership. (20%).
  • Participate in departmental and project activities such as developing pipelines, participating in conducting courses and workshops at JAX, provide leading contributions to grant applications, helping students and scientists, possibly participating in CS Helpdesk and presenting results and processes to JAX community and at conferences and workshops as assigned. (10-20%)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Biostatistics or any relevant area. The candidates who are near the completion of their PhD can also apply.
  • Associate Computational Scientist, in addition to PhD, also possess 2-5 years of experience in Bioinformatics research, excluding time spent to obtain PhD.
  • Successful incumbents demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects and collaborations is key.
  • Prior successes in and desire to contribute to team projects on an ongoing basis is a must.

About JAX:

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution with a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center and nearly 3,000 employees in locations across the United States (Maine, Connecticut, California),Japan andChina. Its mission is to discover precise genomic solutions for disease and empower the global biomedical community in the shared quest to improve human health.

Founded in 1929, JAX applies over nine decades of expertise in genetics to increase understanding of human disease, advancing treatments and cures for cancer, neurological and immune disorders, diabetes, aging and heart disease. It models and interprets genomic complexity, integrates basic research with clinical application, educates current and future scientists, and provides critical data, tools and services to the global biomedical community.
