Position Summary
The Work Management Specialist (Project Planner) is responsible for planning and coordinating maintenance and capital project work to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective execution. This position develops comprehensive, barrier-free work packages that support successful project implementation while maintaining compliance with company standards, regulatory requirements, and safety expectations.
The successful candidate will work closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Supply Chain, Contractors, and Project Management to plan, coordinate, and support outage and project activities from initiation through completion.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed work breakdown structures (WBS) for maintenance and capital projects.
- Prepare complete, barrier-free work packages including detailed work scope, Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) plans, Quality plans, Resource plans, Schedules, and Cost estimates.
- Procure parts and materials required to support project execution.
- Prepare contract Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and participate in contractor bid evaluations.
- Obtain quotations and submit requisitions for non-stock parts & materials, equipment, and contractor services.
- Coordinate with Supply Chain to ensure timely delivery of project materials.
- Assist in prioritizing preventive and corrective maintenance work orders.
- Submit equipment Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) requests.
- Develop Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and maintenance procedures.
- Support configuration change activities by identifying spare parts, updating inventory, removing obsolete materials, initiating drawing revisions, and developing preventive maintenance job plans.
- Participate in planning, scheduling, and project coordination meetings.
- Communicate regularly with project stakeholders regarding scope, schedule, risks, and execution.
- Participate in Duke Energy's Safety Observation Program.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Associates degree
- Minimum 3 years' related work experience
- In lieu of Associates degree and 3 years experience, High School/GED and 7 years related work experience.
Desired Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience in power plant operations, maintenance, work management, or project planning.
- Experience using Maximo or a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Project.
- Experience using PI ProcessBook or other plant information systems.
- Working knowledge of generating station systems, equipment, and operating principles.
- Experience interpreting equipment drawings, P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical diagrams.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to work independently and influence cross functional teams.
- Experience developing cost estimates and analyzing financial information.
- Two or more years of contract administration or contract management experience.
- Two or more years of project management experience.
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
Specific Requirements
- Must have the ability to be respirator qualified
- Valid driver's license
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Experience and demonstrated computer skills including the ability to use various applications such as Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project), work management system (Maximo), Plant Information (PI) program
- Experience and demonstrated written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others
- Working knowledge of overall operating fundamentals and principles of generating station systems, equipment and processes
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a leadership capacity
- Demonstrated ability and previous experience in understanding, interpreting, communicating and analyzing financial data
- At least 5 years of plant operations, maintenance, and/or work management experience
- Proficient interpreting and understanding equipment/component diagrams, drawings, and schematics
- Financial and accounting knowledge and skills including ability to analyze data
- 2 years of experience in contract management
- 2 years of experience in project management
- Proficient in Maximo or computer-based Maintenance Management Systems
- Must be able to read, comprehend, inspect, calculate, count, retain and make sound decisions
- Basic knowledge of power plant operation and the Work Management process
- Working knowledge of company computer systems/programs that are utilized in the Work Management process
- Basic scheduling tool knowledge
- Demonstrated effective time management skills
- Demonstrated effective skills in problem solving
- Interpersonal skills to effectively work with all station groups
- Basic ability to lead effective/efficient meetings
Working Conditions
- Onsite Mobility Classification - Work will be performed at a company facility.
- Performs work in a power plant and an office environment
- Required to observe work in all areas of generating facilities which are power plant, industrial environments operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and humidity
- May be required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights; enter vessels or equipment with limited access; walk, stoop, bend or squat
- Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, use and reach with hands, arms and fingers
- There is potential exposure to high stress situations and requirement to be available for emergency response as required by the needs of service
