Job Summary:

The Solar Tech is primarily responsible for providing support to multiple PV plant sites located throughout Duke Energy Florida's service territory on a continual/on-demand basis, in order to troubleshoot/resolve equipment issues such as emergency repairs, design change requirements, and equipment modifications and to establish O&M support for new plant(s) start-up as well as long term operation and maintenance. Role will include work scheduling, maintenance, equipment installation, and start-up support. Position will also be responsible for supporting existing equipment performance and reliability, work to support equipment testing schedules and assigning contracts, technicians, and engineers to appropriate tasks while developing processes to improve O&M output quality.

Below are the Essential Functions & Responsibilities of this position including but not limited to:

  • Perform daily operational rounds and operations activities up to and including developing and implementing complex Lock-Out-Tag-Outs (LOTOs) . This includes being competent to train to become LOTO desk qualified

  • Perform SCADA, Telecomm, inverter, battery system, and array maintenance tasks.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks.

  • Perform all LOTO tasks needed for maintenance activities including research, development, isolation, independent verification, zero energy verification and work leader duties.

  • Perform contractor oversight duties.

  • Communicate with Operations Centers (RROC, TCC, ECC) regarding daily plant/ equipment status and maintenance. Daily travel could include multiple site visits.

  • Perform rotational On-Call duties in support of Peak and Baseload generation needs.

  • Perform record keeping duties concerning Environmental, Health & Safety records, spread sheets and documents.

  • Ability to read and understand technical OEM manuals, recommendations, and warranty agreements

  • Perform startup duties necessary to commission new sites which will include but not limited to, punch list, developing procedures and PM's, system walk downs, assisting startup personnel with commissioning activities, starting/stopping units from multiple branded Control Systems.

  • Must have strong instrumentation, electrical/electronic controls knowledge to troubleshoot, maintain and operate a photovoltaic solar plant and/or battery storage site

  • Take the role as integration lead for new sites to ensure RRE standards are met prior to turn over from Duke's construction group. This requires the ability to coordinate, time management, and thorough record keeping

  • New hires must be able to become proficient in the aforementioned required skills to be able to trouble shoot the varying technologies

  • Ability to read and understand technical electrical, civil, and mechanical drawings

  • General knowledge of high voltage equipment and ability to perform high voltage switching

  • Prepare service reports for site visits, emergency repairs, equipment modifications and equipment improvement investigations

  • Ensure a safe, event-free work environment by ensuring strict adherence to company protocols

  • Enforce procedures and processes in accordance with site specific O&M Standards and guidelines

  • Develop and review site specific procedures.

  • Understand and enforce BES site requirements.

  • This position requires more than 50% domestic regional travel

Basic/Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • 1 or more years of electrical maintenance or Solar PV systems experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years technical training or military training in electrical maintenance or Solar PV Systems
  • Associate's degree or Technical Certification /Training in the electrical field with a year or more experience, preferably in power plant or related technical industry.

  • Working knowledge of power distribution systems

  • Previous experience working with inverters, electrical design, Maximo CMMS, centralized SCADA/EMS control systems and associated network devices;
  • knowledge of National Electrical Code
  • 5 or more years of electrical maintenance or Solar PV Systems experience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; Excellent communication skills both oral and written;
  • Able to troubleshoot and solve problems;
  • Ability to work independently; familiar with electrical test and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to train and develop employees in lower levels of this job title.

Working Conditions:

  • Field Mobility Classification - Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

  • Must be able to work 12-hour rotating shifts, extended hours, nights, weekends and maintain flexibility as plant conditions and events require.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment such as a hardhat, steel toed safety shoes, safety glasses, arc flash protective gear.

  • Must be able to work around rotating equipment, in extreme heat/cold, electromagnetic fields, be able to climb, crawl, kneel, stand, sit and walk.

  • Must be able to climb, crawl, kneel, stand, sit, and walk.

  • Must live within one hour of a site under their responsibility.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Ability to work in high temperatures and direct sunlight required.

  • Travel is likely and overnight trips may be required.

  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.

Specific requirements:

  • Successful completion of the MASS test

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
