The Associate Dean for Administration serves as the School's chief administrative officer and provides strategic, school-wide leadership for the School of Nursing's administrative infrastructure, fiscal stewardship, human resources, information technology, facilities, and operational planning. As a member of the senior leadership team, the Associate Dean for Administration works collaboratively with the Dean, associate deans, department chairs, faculty, staff, University partners, UVA Health partners, and external stakeholders to ensure that the School's teaching, research, practice, and service missions are supported by effective, sustainable, and innovative administrative systems. The Associate Dean for Administration reports directly to the Dean and supervises administrative leaders and staff as assigned. Areas of responsibility include: Strategic Administrative Leadership
- Collaborate with the Dean and senior leadership team to identify opportunities, risks, operational challenges, and resource needs that impact the School's strategic priorities.
- Lead administrative planning efforts that align fiscal, human, technological, and facility resources with institutional goals and emerging opportunities.
- Promote a culture of accountability, service excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement across administrative functions.
Financial Planning and Resource Stewardship
- Serve as the School's senior administrative leader for budget development, short and long-term fiscal planning, financial management, and resource allocation.
- Advise the Dean and senior leadership team regarding financial strategy, resource utilization, operational investments, and long-term fiscal sustainability.
- Develop and oversee School budgets in accordance with University, Provost Office, and UVA Health guidelines while supporting strategic priorities and operational needs.
- Oversee ongoing financial reporting to both the Academic Division and UVAHealth.
- Establish systems that support transparent financial reporting, fiscal accountability, compliance, and responsible stewardship of School resources.
- Supervise the preparation, reconciliation, and distribution of financial reports and oversee procurement and payment processes.
- Provide guidance regarding the management of endowments, gift funds, cost-sharing agreements, grant-related revenue, and other funding sources.
- Collaborate with School and University partners to support the effective administration of student financial aid, scholarships, and other student funding programs, ensuring alignment with enrollment strategies, student success initiatives, and the School's commitment to access and affordability.
Human Resources and Organizational Development
- Provide strategic leadership for human resource planning, workforce development, talent management, employee engagement, and organizational effectiveness.
- Collaborate with University Human Resources to ensure compliance with employment policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
- Oversee faculty appointment renewal processes and administrative personnel actions.
- Serve as administrative leader for School staff, partnering closely with UVAHR on workforce strategy, employee relations, performance management, compensation and merit planning.
Information Technology and Operational Infrastructure
- Supervise and support technology leaders in developing and implementing technology strategies that advance the School's missions and operational priorities.
- Oversee the development of information security, disaster recovery, business continuity, and risk management plans.
Facilities, Space, and Safety Management
- Provide strategic oversight for facilities planning, space utilization, capital improvement initiatives, workplace safety, and operational readiness.
- Oversee processes related to space assignments, workplace accommodations, ergonomic assessments, and facility enhancements.
- Coordinate School-wide safety, emergency preparedness, security, and risk management initiatives.
Administrative Services and Cross-Mission Collaboration
- Advise leaders across the School regarding financial, human resources, technology, facilities, operational, and compliance matters.
- Partner with the Associate Dean for Nursing Research, Associate Dean for Academic Operations, and other academic leaders to support strategic initiatives that require coordinated administrative planning and resource allocation.
- Represent the School on University committees and initiatives related to administration, finance, human resources, facilities, technology, and organizational effectiveness.
Leadership and Personnel Management
- Supervise administrative leaders and staff as assigned, including leaders responsible for budget and finance, information systems and security, faculty appointments, facilities, and related administrative functions.
- Build leadership capacity within administrative teams through mentorship, succession planning, and organizational development.
Advisory and Senior Leadership Collaboration
- Advise the Dean and senior leadership team on administrative strategy, resource needs, organizational effectiveness, operational risks, and institutional opportunities.
- Collaborate with School leaders to identify future staffing, infrastructure, technology, facility, and resource needs necessary to support growth and innovation.
Service
- Serve as an ex-officio member on School committees, as defined in the bylaws.
- Represent the School in University, UVAHealth, Commonwealth, and professional settings related to administration, finance, human resources, operations, and higher education leadership.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.
Required Qualifications The successful candidate must:
- Possess a master's degree or higher in business, higher education, or a related field.
- Have at least ten years of experience with increasing responsibility in a large, complex organization.
- Demonstrate significant leadership experience in higher education, healthcare, academic health systems, or other complex organizations.
- Have experience overseeing multiple administrative functions, including finance, human resources, technology, facilities, or operations.
- Demonstrate success leading organizational change, strategic planning, and operational improvement initiatives.
Ideal Experience and Characteristics The successful candidate will be an accomplished administrator, strategic leader, collaborator, and systems thinker with demonstrated ability to lead complex administrative operations in a higher education, healthcare, or academic health system environment. Physical Demands This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. The anticipated hiring range is $220,000-$230,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. Learn more about UVA benefits.
