About this Position
Pinyon is seeking on-call Geologists to provide as-needed field support for site characterization and remedial investigation projects across the Denver Metro area and greater Colorado region. This is a self-directed, field-focused role where you'll serve as Pinyon's on-site geologic lead during subsurface investigations - logging soils, overseeing drillers and subcontractors, installing and developing monitoring wells, and collecting soil and groundwater samples.
Work is dispatched on an as-needed basis tied to client project schedules. Ideal candidates are experienced field geologists who are comfortable running a drill site independently, managing subcontractors, and producing defensible field documentation without day-to-day oversight.

Essential Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform soil logging and preparation of boring logs in accordance with ASTM D2488 and the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS)
  • Oversee drillers and subcontractors during Phase II ESAs, preliminary investigations, remedial investigations, and environmental audits
  • Plan and execute monitoring well installation, development, and abandonment
  • Conduct soil sampling, groundwater sampling, water level and groundwater gradient surveys, and ground elevation surveys
  • Operate and maintain standard environmental field equipment, including photoionization detectors (PIDs), water level meters, water quality meters, multi-gas meters, and survey equipment
  • Maintain chain-of-custody documentation and coordinate sample submittal to accredited laboratories
  • Apply and interpret state and federal environmental regulations relevant to site characterization and remediation
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, clients, subcontractors, and regulatory representatives throughout the project lifecycle
  • Maintain project documents, field notes, and records in an organized and easily understood fashion
  • Some travel within Colorado is required; majority of work is in the Denver Metro area
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geologic Engineering, Geoscience, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant environmental consulting or site characterization experience
  • Demonstrated field experience with soil logging (ASTM D2488 / USCS), monitoring well installation, and soil and groundwater sampling
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing drillers and subcontractors on active field sites
  • Ability to work independently on active field sites and respond to on-call dispatch on short notice
  • Capacity to work outdoors in all seasons through various kinds of weather; extended workdays may be required
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office programs
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to reach field sites throughout Colorado
  • Employment is contingent upon the results of a background check.
Preferred but not Required Skills and Certifications:
  • Wyoming Professional Geologist (PG) registration or equivalent (e.g., AIPG Certified Professional Geologist)
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with annual refresher (Pinyon will provide recertification if needed)
  • Experience with ASTM E1527-21 and Phase I / Phase II ESA workflows
  • Familiarity with state environmental regulations (soil, groundwater, surface water, soil gas, vapor intrusion) in Colorado, Arizona, North Dakota, or Wyoming
  • Experience with GPS and field surveying equipment
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization in Excel or similar tools
  • Familiarity with Colorado asbestos-in-soil regulations and RACS oversight procedures
  • Familiarity with the following:
    • ASTM E1527-21
    • State environmental regulations (Soil, Groundwater, Surface Water, Soil Gas, Vapor Intrusion): Arizona, Colorado, North Dakota, Wyoming
    • Data analysis and data visualization using Excel or other programs
