About the Job

50% Manage chemistry stockrooms and instructional lab spaces in collaboration with other Laboratory Services Coordinator(s) in the Department:

  • Train, mentor and supervise student employees (SLA's) for work in the Departments' stockrooms, scheduling and directing tasks and duties.
  • Maintain, improve, and repair the inventory of laboratory equipment, supplies, glassware and consumables for the in-house and remote experiments.
  • Create, implement and maintain the various experiment apparatus used in the instructional labs.
  • Supply the instructional labs in HCAMS with the needed chemicals and reagents.
  • Maintain the stock of commonly used chemicals for the in-house and remote instructional lab experiments, including purchasing and receiving of supplies and chemicals as needed.
  • Maintain schedule of lab classes in each teaching laboratory including preferred class times and section number assignments

35% Support equipment, instruments, and computers:

  • Research, install, maintain, repair, upgrade instruments and equipment in the instructional labs.
  • Provide assistance with installation, maintenance, repair, and upgrade of instruments and equipment for use in the faculty's research labs.
  • Keep an inventory of department equipment and instrumentation, including lists of instrumentation and equipment to purchase as budgets allow.
  • Research, install, maintain, repair, upgrade and re-purpose department computers used in faculty and staff offices as well as all the instructional, computer, and instrument labs. Help select, purchase, distribute and manage access to special software and applications used for instructional and research activities.

15% Departmental Service and Projects:

  • Departmental Committee Service: Serving on the Physical Resources Committee (PRC) and Undergraduate Studies Committee
  • Inventorying space, equipment, and instruments to provide needed asset reporting.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Management on space, renovation, and instrument installation needs.
  • HCAMS Building Safety Lead and departmental liaison to Environmental Health and Safety for instructional labs in HCAMS.
  • Other departmental laboratory support duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree plus at least four years of related experience, or a combination of
    education and related work experience to equal at least eight years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry (or similar / related field)
  • Experience operating and maintaining chemistry laboratory instrumentation (e.g. FTIR, GC, UV-Vis)
  • Experience in chemistry laboratories, including upholding safety requirements and managing chemical inventories
  • Experience in Google suite and Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience managing personnel and mentoring students
  • Experience in UMD's UMarket ordering system, PeopleSoft, and related UMN Enterprise systems
  • Experience in project management and logistics management
Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25.72 - $34.07 per hour depending on education/qualifications/experience
