Job Summary:
The Senior Design Engineer is a key member of the Customer Engineering Services (CES) Engineering team and will be based in Messer's Bridgewater, New Jersey office. This individual will design bulk cryogenic storage and piping supply systems that provide nitrogen, oxygen, medical oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen to food, metals, and chemicals industry customers among others. This role will have diverse responsibilities supporting operations, new business/projects, best practices, standardization, continuous improvement, and technician training with a focus on achieving optimal safety, quality, and reliability for Messer America's Bulk business.

Principal Responsibilities:



  • Fulfil the role of design engineer for the specification and selection of materials, components, and equipment used for cryogenic nitrogen, oxygen, medical oxygen, argon, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen bulk storage and supply systems installed at customer facilities nationwide.
  • Develop bulk cryogenic storage and process piping supply system P&IDs and equipment sub assembly designs and drawings.
  • Support Messer Americas safety goals through development and implementation of standard designs for bulk cryogenic customer station systems.
  • Interpret customer specification and process requirements to develop conceptual designs in support of project proposals.
  • Provide engineering support as needed throughout the project execution process from the initial design and specification through fabrication, testing, installation, and commissioning.
  • Assist regional operations and maintenance personnel by providing engineering support for major maintenance events, upgrades, troubleshooting efforts, and system modifications via Engineering Management of Change
  • Process (EMOC).
  • Provide technical support to the U.S. bulk medical gases market and support Messer Americas safety goals through development and implementation of standard designs for bulk medical gas supply systems installed at customer sites.
  • Responsible for the development of new and existing standards, specifications, procedures, and technical bulletins while following Messer and CES' document management and control policies. Must champion and apply Messer and CES standards to assure safety, consistency, and quality are achieved across all assigned projects.
  • Support CES' product subject matter experts for bulk gas systems as required.
  • Develop an expertise of relevant national, industry standards, and best practices organizations such as International Building Code (IBC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Compressed Gas Association (CGA). Ensure that Messer Americas cryogenic customer station designs and installations are installed and maintained in accordance with current industry codes and guidelines.
  • Support root cause analysis investigations and provide fact-based recommendations and modifications with a focus on improved safety and reliability.
  • Conduct and/or assist with formal safety and reliability reviews of system and equipment designs.


Required Skills:



  • Solid foundational engineering knowledge pertaining to process piping systems and thermodynamics along with analytical problem-solving ability in a process industry. Experience in industrial gases and cryogenic bulk storage and piping system design is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively provide technical knowledge. Sufficient business acumen to interface with external vendors and customers.
  • Working knowledge of pressure vessel design, fabrication, and inspection codes such as ASME BPVC-VIII and process piping design and codes such as ASME B31.3 Process Piping.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 55 Compressed Gases and Cryogenics Fluid Code is a plus.
  • Knowledge of/experience with national codes and industry standards such as OSHA PSM, CGA S-1.3 Pressure Relief Device Standards, National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), and the National Electrical Code (NEC) a plus.
  • Knowledge of/experience with oxygen materials compatibility national codes and standards such as CGA G-4.1, ASTM G88 Guide of Designing Systems for Oxygen Service, ASTM G94 Evaluating Metals for Oxygen Service, and ASTM G93 Cleaning Methods and Cleanliness Levels for Oxygen Enriched Environments, a plus.
  • Working knowledge of Process Safety Reviews (PHA, HAZOP), Engineering Management of Change, Risk Assessment techniques (SIL, LOPA), and reliability assessments (FMEA).
  • Experience with 2D CAD/AutoCAD is required. Experience with 3D Modeling (Solidworks, Autodesk Fusion 360) experience is a plus.
  • Excellent computer skills (MS Office, MS Project, Visio); Programming experience (VBA, python) a plus.
  • Belief in safety first approach.

Basic Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering major from an ABET accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 8 years' experience with process equipment engineering: P&IDs, process piping and capital equipment design, fluid flow calculations, pipe and valve sizing/selection/specification.


The salary range for this position is $105,000-136,000. Messer provides medical, dental, vision, short term disability, life insurance and paid time off as well as other voluntary benefits, such as, long term disability in accordance with the terms and conditions of these Plans. Employees are eligible to enroll in Messer's 401(k) Plan. Employees may be eligible to participate in the company's bonus program.
