Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
*Demonstrates true engagement and enthusiasm to contribute toward the care delivery needs for patients and families.
*Promotes an inclusive environment supportive of patient and family centered care for a diverse community.
*Accepts assignments for patient care within the scope of his/her preparation and within current standards of practice. In conjunction with a Licensed Independent Provider (LIP) , LPN or RN, participates in the gathering of data that contributes to the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care delivered.
*Collaborates as a member of the health care team, contributing toward a supportive and therapeutic environment that promotes the attainment of patient goals that are specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and timely.
*Accurately obtains vital signs, elicits information about the patient's basic health status, administers relevant care within scope of practice and as directed by the LIP/LPN/RN, and documents as appropriate in the electronic health record.
*Performs routine tests that may include but are not limited to: electrocardiograms, vision and hearing screening, and the collection of specimens for laboratory testing and point of care.
*Participates in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients in conjunction with the LIP/LPN/RN. Reinforces patient instruction as directed by LIP/LPN/RN.
*Participates in organizational and unit-based quality improvement initiatives and compliance readiness.
*Participates in telephone screening of patients; may provide instruction to patient when directed by the LIP/LPN/RN.
*Participates in prescription management tasks including pending of new prescriptions and renewals requiring LIP approval, prior authorizations and medication reconciliation.
*Following approved clinical practice guidelines (CPG's) and workflows, sends appropriate orders for radiology, laboratory testing and other care needs requiring LIP authorization.
*Performs a variety of tasks, including those that may be facilitated by administrative staff, which have an effect on the overall operations of the unit. These include flow, stocking of rooms, scheduling tasks and all other duties as assigned. Should we take this out of this version since it is redundant? It's meant to be part of the regular MA job because they could be asked to occasionally do some of this work.
Administrative Duties and Responsibilities:
*Answer and transfer telephone calls.
*Schedule and register patients for appointments/procedures, confirm appointments/procedures, prepare for patient visit by providing patient with all necessary information and completing all necessary tasks.
*Receive patient at arrival, verify and obtain all necessary information, and ensure forms are completed.
*Ensure all billing/fiscal information is completed and submitted after visit, including collection and daily reconciliation of any co-payments.
*Assist with special projects as directed.
*Assist with training and orienting staff as needed
*Follow HIPAA guidelines for the management of patient privacy and confidentiality.
*Appropriately utilizes organizational resources including management of time, supplies, equipment and other assets.
*Other duties as assigned.

Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Obtain full set of vital signs and record on vitals sheet and in Epic. Report any abnormal finding to the appropriate clinician
  • Review all medications with patient and make sure it is accurate and up to date in including dosage, frequency and route. Confirm that all allergies, contraindications, reactions and severity of allergy are up to date and reviewed in Epic.
  • Perform pulmonary function testing (PFT), oximetry (SaO2) and 6 minute walk tests as needed. Document all results in Epic as appropriate.
  • Manage patient flow in clinic by rooming patients, facilitating room turnover and communicating effectively on the clinic schedule board. Call PAs or MDs when necessary.
  • Arrange hospital transport or assist in transporting patients to various departments as needed. Liaison between departments in the hospital and clinic for patient care. Arrange ambulance transportation as needed.
  • Clean all exam rooms between each patient with the appropriate wipes and ensure that supplies are adequately stocked
  • Assist MD/PA with all office procedures including Thoracentesis. Label and prepare any patient specimen for processing and coordinate with transport to ensure that it brought to the appropriate lab before end of day
  • Remove stitches, staples, steri-strips and dressings as directed by MD. Clean and re-dress dressings and feeding tubes as directed. breathing treatments to patients in clinic as needed and directed.
  • Prepare clinic for opening: Daily calibration of PFT/Oximetry equipment, thermometers, scales and maintain logbooks. Daily check of medication refrigerator for medication amount, expiration dates and temperatures. Verify exam rooms are clean including the floor and stocked including linen, all lights are working, all schedules are posted, consult/MD offices are prepared, phone messages have been taken off, cabinets are unlocked, and clinic list is given to radiology liaison.
  • Prepare clinic for closing: verify all exam rooms are cleaned and restocked. All cabinets are locked, all sharps containers are checked for volume, all computers are shut down and logged off. Create daily schedule on Magnatag board for following clinic. Print clinic schedules and post in designated locations. Prepare all paperwork for Attending to sign is ready for the next day. Responsible for ordering all clinical supplies including respiratory and linens. Ensure adequate supply of forms. Send equipment for sterilization. Verify all equipment, supplies and medications are not expired.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by Practice Manager and/or MD/PA/NP, including all generally accepted office functions such as faxing, scanning, and mailing.

Practice Assistant Responsibilities:

  • Answer all incoming phone calls in a polite and courteous manner. Triage all phone calls appropriately throughout the division and hospital. Page Physician Assistants with medical questions from patients, in accordance with protocol.
  • Schedule patients for outpatient clinic appointments, both in person and over the telephone, in as timely a fashion as possible and in accordance with the Attending's directions.
  • Thoroughly create and schedule all coordinating chest x-rays and chest CT scans for the outpatient clinic appointments mentioned above, also in as timely a fashion as possible and in accordance with the Attending's directions.
  • Clearly communicate appointment/imaging information to patients at time of booking
  • Follow up on patients having imaging done at outside facilities to ensure that we obtain the images and patients are scheduled for their follow-up visits.
  • Manage unscheduled radiology orders through the Appointment Requests workqueue.
  • Contact patients on "Bump" list making notes inEpic appointment messageand/or mailing letters as necessary according to said protocol.
  • Triage requests made through email or inbasket in a timely fashion, assisting patients directly or routing to the correct team as appropriate
  • Fax/mail all medical requests to the requesting facility or Physician, in accordance with HIPAA guidelines and regulations.
  • All other duties as assigned by manager.
