Senior Human Resources Generalist - On-site

We are adding this Sr. HR Generalist position to our Corporate Human Resources team at our corporate headquarters located in Cottage Grove, WI.

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of professional HR experience from two or more mid-sized employers (300 to 1,500 employees), including extensive hands-on involvement with a variety of traditional HR responsibilities and broad working knowledge of all aspects of HR.

Specific responsibilities for this Sr. HR Generalist position will be determined based on how the individual's experience can maximize the strengths, knowledge, and interests of all members of the HR Team as the company grows.

Experience will be evaluated in each of the following areas:



  • Employment laws: compliance, reporting, policies, handbooks, internal investigations, state-specific laws/benefits
  • HR Information System (HRIS): general use, reporting tools, new system implementation
  • Payroll processing, review/reconciliation, reporting
  • Recruitment: postings, interviews, onboarding, orientation, applicant tracking system (ATS)
  • Job assessment, job descriptions
  • Benefits: insurance, FSA/HSA/HRA, retirement plans (401k, ESOP), paid time off
  • Leaves of absence
  • Employee relations, engagement, culture, exit interviews, turnover analysis
  • Performance management, succession planning
  • Training and development; learning management system (LMS)
  • Coaching managers
  • Safety, workers compensation, DOT compliance
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Monitoring professional certifications, driver's licenses & other important credentials
  • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)


In addition to experience with many of the above, we are looking for:



  • Intermediate level Excel skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid math and analytical skills; detail-oriented
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Great teamwork attitude with a willingness to get involved with any/all HR areas as needed
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of private and sensitive information
  • Ability and willingness to travel out of state and overnight a few times per year


Candidates with supervisory experience and/or demonstrated leadership qualities are encouraged to apply. Although SMS is in the healthcare space, experience in unrelated industries such as construction or manufacturing, especially with a mobile, multi-state workforce would also be a good fit.
