What You Will Do:

GFT is seeking a Licensed Fire Protection Engineer to join our Building and Places Business Group in Washington DC!

This role will support fire protection design efforts for clients across various sectors including federal government, education, transit, transportation and industrial. In this capacity, the successful candidate will have a working knowledge of fire sprinkler, fire suppression, and fire alarm. They would also be experience in code research for life safety analysis, be responsible for coordinating with local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), performing sizing calculations, developing performance criteria documents (drawings and specifications), coordinating with site utilities, on-site inspections and witness testing.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Design of fire protection systems for various projects including commercial buildings, labs, hospitals, maintenance buildings, educational buildings, manufacturing facilities, airports, research facilities.
  • Type of fire protection systems includes wet and dry fire protection, pre-action systems, and clean agent systems.
  • Working knowledge of fire alarm and mass notification systems.
  • Familiarity with NFPA guidelines and International Building Codes.
  • Survey and study of building fire protection equipment and systems.
  • Technical direction of fire protection designers and technicians on specific projects.
  • Develop written project status reports.
  • Project specification writing.
  • Project management.
  • Code interpretation and resolution with Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • Proactive problem identification and resolution.
  • Coordination and verification of project deliverables.
  • Participate in meeting with prospective clients, as well as general client interaction.
  • Travel to project sites for project related activities.
Education | Experience:

What you will bring to our firm:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 8 or more years of experience in fire protection engineering consulting.
  • FPE required, active license in at least one state of the USA.
  • Thorough understanding of fire protection building codes and construction standards.
  • Computer proficiency in applications within MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Experience working with federal government, higher education and industrial facilities preferred.
  • Experience with transportation and maintenance facilities is a plus.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills required.
  • Minimum, a thorough understanding of NFPA 13, 72, and 90A Standards, International Building Code, International Fire Code, Uniform Facilities Codes (UFC).

Compensation:

The Salary range for this position is $140,000 -$180,000. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
