The University of Iowa Department of Psychiatry is currently accepting applications for a full-time Pre-Doctoral Intern in the Intellectual Disability-Mental Illness (IDMI) program for 2026/27. This clinically based internship includes approximately 2000 hours of specialized training in clinical psychology; 1500 hours of which will be supervised professional experience as required by the Iowa Board of Psychology for licensure purposes.

The Pre-Doctoral Intern will be an active member of a specialized interdisciplinary team of social work, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, and medicine with expertise supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities, mental illness, and severe challenging behaviors. The Intern will train in providing outpatient therapy, clinical assessments, education, and consultation to patients/families and care providers.

Primary placement will be in the adult IDMI outpatient program with opportunity for rotations that will include a combination of the following activities: Outpatient Individual Psychotherapy (Lifespan), Outpatient Adapted Group therapy (Adult), and/or Child/Adolescent Psychological Assessment with Pediatric Psychology (Inpatient and Outpatient). The Intern will participate in at least 2 hours/week of formal didactic activities and will provide direct psychological services of greater than 25% time. Advanced opportunities for research, teaching and leadership exist.

Educational and Certification requirements:

Master's degree with preference for those currently enrolled in a PhD or PsyD program in Clinical, School or Counseling Psychology.

Completion of a provisional license from the appropriate Iowa Board.

Minimum 6-12 months of Clinical Mental Health experience, which may include practicum experience.
