Job Description

Elwyn seeks a Carpenter that is responsible for performing skilled rough and finish carpentry, construction, installation, and repair work across Elwyn facilities. This role supports new construction, remodeling projects, preventive maintenance, and general building repairs, including work on structures, furniture, fixtures, roofs, drywall, concrete, and specialty wood products. The Carpenter plans and designs projects, estimates labor and material costs, reads and interprets blueprints, and ensures all work meets safety, quality, and compliance standards. The position also maintains tools and equipment, responds to emergency repairs, documents work in the CMMS system, and may train or lead other maintenance staff. The Carpenter plays a key role in supporting safe, functional, and well maintained environments for individuals and staff across the organization.

Salary: $25-$35/hr

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform rough and finish carpentry including building additions and remodels, cabinets, tables, chairs, therapeutic appliances, and specialty wood products.
  • Plan and design jobs after consulting with people needing the work accomplished.
  • Estimate costs of material and labor.
  • Build and patch roofs.
  • Install floor and wall coverings, and ceiling material, paneling, plastic laminates, and hardware.
  • Repair broken windows, doors, walls, ceilings, and furniture.
  • Install door jambs and hang metal and wood doors.
  • Construct and letter sign.
  • Hang and finish drywall and finish walls with wood, structural metal, lath, and plaster.
  • Repair/replace railings, hand rails, stair treads, nosings and gratings.
  • Build platforms, podiums, partitions, ramps, and fences.
  • Read plans, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Excavate, build forms, and pour and finish concrete.
  • Install insulation and weather stripping.
  • Maintain and repair machinery, tools, and equipment used in the carpentry trade; install towel racks, dispensers, pictures, and curtains.
  • Clean respective work areas; may paint, stain, and restore antiques.
  • Train others in carpentry work.
  • Assist other maintenance and crafts staff performing their duties.
  • Operates equipment such table saws, circular saws, jointers, drills, presses and associated trade tools.
  • Responds to emergency call-backs.
  • Functions as lead worker over other maintenance staff and assists with general related trade duties.
  • Assures all work orders are completed with all labor and material
  • Conducts preventive maintenance on building devices and systems
  • Operates equipment used in building maintenance and repair
  • Ensures that routine preventive maintenance is performed according to established schedules and standards.
  • Assures all work is completed in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Verify and implement preventive maintenance standards on all systems and equipment under their oversight
  • Document all work in the CMMS system.
  • Enforces all Boise State University safety and risk management policies and procedures; reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner and identifies and corrects unsafe work conditions with management oversight.
  • Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

EDUCATION

  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, schedule and execute work assignments.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare reports such as cost estimates.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact and maintain working relationships and collaborate with others.
  • Knowledge and skill in computer applications and related programs in support of the business activities.
  • Experience in performing skilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical and building maintenance repair.
  • Experience in using and maintaining specialized tools and equipment associated with trades.
    Reading blueprints and schematics.
  • Considerable knowledge of building maintenance.
  • Performing rough and finish carpentry; performing new and remodel masonry, concrete, and wood construction.
  • Using and maintaining the tools and equipment associated with journey-level carpentry work; insuring safety practices are followed on carpentry job sites.
  • Estimating time and materials needed for carpentry related jobs.
  • Visualizing, sketching, and designing wood projects.
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • Good knowledge of building codes.
  • 10 or more years of related work experience.
  • Must possess a current, valid driver's license in the state of residence, have a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience within the United States, and have an acceptable driving record, which will be assessed through a review of the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) record, in accordance with Elwyn's Vehicle Operation and Driver's Code Policy 905. For individuals licensed for more than two (2) years, the driving record will be reviewed for acceptability based on the past three (3) years. Additionally, employees required to drive as part of their job may need to successfully complete and pass an Elwyn Road Test before being authorized to drive.

License/Qualifications
Certifications:

  • Holds appropriate license/certification for the specific work to be done in the city and state in which the work will be completed.
  • Valid Driver License.
  • Must pass background check
