Organizational Overview:

Staffed by dedicated healthcare professionals, the Occupational Medicine Clinic is available to employees during regular business hours. We emphasize effective prevention and optimal management of work-related health problems. Our staff maintain excellence in standards of care while addressing the occupational and environmental health concerns of Laboratory employees.

The Physician - Occupational Medicine provides comprehensive occupational health care services to all Brookhaven National Laboratory employees. This role is responsible for implementing and overseeing occupational health policies, practices, and procedures, including outpatient medical care and occupational physical examinations. The Physician evaluates medical and workplace health issues, makes evidence-based recommendations, and assists the Director of the Occupational Medicine Clinic in the management and continuous improvement of occupational health services.

This position is an 80% appointment, with a regular schedule of 32 hours per week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of occupational health conditions.
  • Conduct pre-placement, periodic, return-to-work, fitness-for-duty, and regulatory physical examinations.
  • Evaluate occupational injuries and illnesses, determine work restrictions or accommodations, and manage follow-up care.
  • Assess medical readiness for job-specific hazards, including physical, chemical, biological, and radiological exposures.
  • Implement and oversee occupational health policies, practices, and procedures in compliance with federal, state, DOE, and Laboratory requirements.
  • Provide medical oversight for occupational health surveillance and monitoring programs.
  • Support Laboratory-wide initiatives focused on injury prevention, employee wellness, and health risk reduction.
  • Provide medical consultation to Laboratory management, Human Resources, safety professionals, and employees regarding fitness for duty, work restrictions, and workplace accommodations.
  • Assist the Director, Occupational Medicine Clinic, with clinic operations, staffing, program development, quality improvement initiatives, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential medical records in accordance with legal, ethical, and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and regulatory reviews as required.
  • Communicate medical findings and recommendations clearly and professionally while maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Educate employees and supervisors on occupational health issues, workplace hazards, and preventive health practices.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Minimum of 6-10 years of progressive professional experience in occupational medicine or a closely related medical specialty.
  • At least 2 years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school is required.
  • Completion of an ACGME- or AOA-accredited residency in Occupational Medicine or a closely related medical specialty is required.
  • Current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in NY.
  • Broad and in-depth knowledge of occupational medicine and related clinical disciplines.
  • Extensive interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with staff, subordinate managers, Laboratory leadership, and customers.
  • Significant understanding of the missions, governance, and management relationships among Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), the Department of Energy (DOE), and external partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong internal and external professional relationships and to understand varying levels of customers and stakeholders.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • A Master's degree (e.g., MPH, MS in Occupational or Environmental Health, MBA, or equivalent) is highly preferred.
  • Board certification or board eligibility in Occupational Medicine strongly preferred.

  • Ability to be Certified as Medical Examiner for DOT physical examinations.
  • This position is an 80% appointment, with a regular schedule of 32 hours per week.
  • This is a fully onsite position located at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $184400 - $220000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
