Works within our Maintenance Operations (MOPS) Branch. Assigns work to crews and individuals daily and dispatches crews accordingly. Ensures necessary utility clearances and vehicle checks have been completed. Participates with crews during construction and evaluate completed assignments to ensure quality of work performed and expended resources correspond to the intended scope of work. .

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist subordinates in safely executing storm water infrastructure repair and rehabilitation projects.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement strategies to improve community service delivery using crew performance data.
  • Inspect sites to ensure maintenance aligns with agency standards and practices.
  • Oversee infrastructure field surveys, investigate Service Requests, and create corrective action work orders.
  • Uses laptops and desktop computers to utilize asset management systems with county GIS to create, edit, and complete assigned work orders.
  • Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Environmental Services Supervisor.
  • Supervise snow removal and flood response operations, prioritize tasks, set schedules, and conduct field quality inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records on attendance, assignments, accidents, Service Requests, crew performance, materials, and work orders.
  • Serve as an essential position responding to stormwater emergencies, including flooding, snow, and other service calls.

Note: The appointee to this position is subject to emergency callback 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flood, and other emergencies requiring division resources.

In 2026, all West Drive assignments will be permanently located at the new Water Resources and Infrastructure building, located at 6000 Freds Oak Road, Burke, VA 22015. Position may require traveling to multiple Fairfax County sites.

* A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in a Senior Maintenance Supervisor position that requires a CDL. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to the following: high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education, and four years of increasingly responsible experience related to the maintenance of municipal facilities and infrastructure from either a public or private organization.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "B".
    • Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
  • Responsible Land Disturber Certification (RLD) within 12 months of hire.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, driving record check, and commercial driver's license screening to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least two years of experience in the following:
  • Experience with vehicles, tools, and equipment operation, including hand and power tools used in stormwater maintenance activities.
  • Familiarity with fundamentals and experience managing equipment, materials, and resources.
  • Experience with stormwater conveyance systems, utilities and/or construction.
  • Experience with best practices and technologies to prevent erosion and sedimentation in stormwater systems.
  • Experience in using computers for day-to-day tasks, including creating and managing files, folders, documents, and email communication.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and Incumbent must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations with entry via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders. Must possess the ability to lift, with assistance, manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds. Physical and mental ability to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment to include hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
