Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Athletics exists to provide educational and athletic opportunities to young men and women, to provide an environment for student-athletes to learn, advance and excel both academically and athletically, and to serve the interests of the University by complimenting and enhancing its diversity and quality of life. Through its athletic programs, the University seeks to unite alumni, faculty, administration and students in a common shared experience. The governing unit within the Department of Athletics is the Director's Office, which is the administrative office and clearinghouse for the entire Department of Athletics, and promotes the department's guiding principle of educating and inspiring through athletics. This unit provides support to administrators, coaches, staff members and student-athletes in order to provide and promote a premier intercollegiate athletic program for The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The Department of Athletics is a highly visible public relations arm of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with statewide, national and international recognition.

Primary purpose of the Athletic Event Management Unit is to provide outstanding service to each of the more than 30 discreet business units associated with athletic varsity competition with a focus on providing the best student-athlete experience possible. For the 28 Varsity Athletic programs, there are more than 250 athletic competitions annually with 1,000,000 campus visitors and a GameDay Personnel overlay of more than 2,000 staff, vendors, volunteers and contractors with an annual financial expenditure of $3,000,000. This unit is responsible for the planning, coordination, execution, final decision making for all elements related to and evaluation of GameDay with a focus on safety and positive enjoyment for student-athletes, staff and fans.
Position Summary
The Department of Athletics boasts 28 intercollegiate varsity sports with competitions, indoor and outdoor, on-campus and off-campus, held in venues ranging in capacity from 1000 to 50,000. Over the course of an individual academic year, including pre-season preparation and post-season evaluation, the unit will manage and direct over 250 Athletic Competitions are related events - often hosting multiple events over a two to three-day period. The position, reporting directly to the Assistant Athletic Director for Event Management, is responsible to provide accountability, organization, communication and ensuring follow through for all Athletic Event Management Unit processes. This position will employ professional knowledge and experience to ensure that all elements of GameDay consistently exceed all expectations.

The Assistant Director of Athletic Event Management is responsible for providing outstanding leadership to the Game Day Management efforts for all assigned sports, including all facets of Division I Athletic event management, including preparation, budget management, facilitation, supervision and evaluation for home regular and post-season varsity competition and key special events.

Responsibilities include administrative support, data collection and analysis; event preparation and event management; technology utilization, planning and management of various projects; procurement and contract management; recruiting, hiring & training; cleaning, health and safety; communication and management of a part time, volunteer and student work force. Responsible for coordinating volunteer workers and organizations to enhance the game environment under the current NCAA Division I guidelines and initiatives. With respect to the coordination of home athletic events, the successful candidate will communicate proactively and efficiently with departmental and university officials, home and visiting coaches, game officials, event management support staff and home and visiting spectators. The range of duties includes, but is not limited to: staffing (i.e. part-time paid supervisors, students, volunteer ushers, etc.) recruitment, training, oversight and retention; customer service training; report and manual writing; submitting and reconciling budgets and financial data and an ever-increasing focus on venue security based on national and international events. Work is performed in an office setting, on athletic fields and in athletic venues in all types of weather conditions and early and late hours.

This position will be responsible for successfully leveraging relationships related to GameDay Operations for each of the units throughout the Athletic Department, and with campus-wide operating units inclusive of, but not limited to: Athletic Department Units (Marketing, Facility Operations, Ticketing, Information Technology, etc.) Rams Club, Tar Heel Sports Properties, Auxiliary Staff Services Contract (Rhino), Aramark Concessions, Rocky Top Hospitality, Environmental Health and Safety, University Events, Facility Services, Emergency and Risk Management, Campus Police, Campus Recreation, and Transportation & Parking. This position will consistently demonstrate thorough and outstanding direction and analysis for all aspects of operations, financial activities, budget utilization and strategic planning for nearly $3 million dollar in annual spending.

This position will be involved in Athletic Event Management planning, operational execution, and evaluation of events at the following locations: Anderson Softball Stadium, Bill Koman Practice Complex, Boshamer Baseball Stadium, Carmichael Arena, Chris Smith Field at Kenan Stadium, Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, Dorrance Field, Eddie Smith Field House, Track & Field Complex, Finley Golf Course, Finley Practice Fields, Loudermilk Center For Excellence, Koury Natatorium, Lake Wheeler (Rowing / ACC Championship), Cary Tennis Park ( NCAA Tennis), Wake Med Soccer Park ( NCAA Championships).
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Demonstrated experience in a recreation or athletic setting in facility operations; demonstrated ability to organize and direct work activity of temporary/volunteer and student employees; demonstrated skill and working knowledge various computer applications. Strong knowledge of mathematical analysis, data collection, evaluation, summarizing and creation & recommendation of insights to improve performance and efficiency. Ability to follow University and departmental policies, procedures and practices. Effective communication skills and ability to interact with senior level administrators, coaches, faculty and staff. Ability to handle sensitive and complex issues that arise during planning and the execution of any game day event. Must be able to work nights, evenings, andweekends and overtime as required. Valid NC Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer a Bachelor's degree in recreation administration, sports management, events management. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as they apply to event management. Experience in event managment in an intercollegiate athletic environment.

Valid NC Driver's License.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift/move 25 lbs or greater. May be required to navigate stairs. Must be able to manage a fast-paced, high-volume environment. Attention to detail essential. Must be able to work extended hours during seasons of competition. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
