Senior Transportation Technician - Inertial Profiler

Requisition Number: 2025-1800-26

S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate Senior Transportation Technician - Inertial Profiler to join our Construction Services team in Atlanta, Georgia. Are you ready to contribute your education, experience, and knowledge to meaningful projects? Join us at S&ME!

As a Senior Transportation Technician specializing as an Inertial Profiler, you will operate advanced profiling equipment to assess pavement smoothness and ride quality across transportation infrastructure projects. Your work supports engineers and project managers by ensuring accurate data collection, analysis, and reporting that directly influences construction quality and compliance. In addition to technical expertise, you will lead and coordinate field activities, mentor junior technicians, and uphold rigorous standards in data integrity and safety. This role bridges high-tech field operations with transportation engineering, contributing to the long-term performance and safety of roadways.

Your Day-to-Day:

  • Operate and Maintain Inertial Profiling Equipment: Perform frequent calibrations, system checks, and routine maintenance on the inertial profiler vehicle and its components to ensure optimal performance and data accuracy.
  • Collect and Analyze Pavement Data: Drive the specialized vehicle at controlled speeds to collect surface data, then process it using software to calculate pavement quality indicators such as the International Roughness Index (IRI).
  • Document Field Activities and Generate Reports: Compose detailed daily diaries and technical reports that include observations, test results, and quantities of work completed. These reports support construction quality control and pavement management programs.
  • Monitor Contractor Compliance and Construction Quality: Inspect construction work and monitor contractor operations to ensure adherence to project specifications, including erosion and sedimentation control measures.
  • Lead and Coordinate Technician Teams: Manage and mentor a team of technicians, assigning tasks, reviewing work, and ensuring cohesive execution of field operations and data collection efforts.

In this role, you may experience shifting work hours based on project needs and weather conditions, including early mornings, some Saturdays and/or Holidays.

What You Bring:

  • One of the following education/experience combinations:

    • High school diploma/GED with 10+ years of highway-related construction or inspection experience, or
    • 2-year technical degree or higher in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology with 5+ years of highway-related construction experience

  • A valid Driver's License
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining inertial profiler systems, including GDT-126 and distance-measuring instruments (DMI)
  • Annual AASHTO test track certification for inertial profiler operation is required and may be obtained within 30 days of hire; additional active certifications, such as ACI, ICC, and DOT in relevant testing areas, a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (speaking, reading, and writing) using the English language to effectively interact with contractors, project staff, and team members
  • A solid understanding of weight, volume, pressure, and measurement units, with the ability to analyze pavement data using specialized software
  • Skilled in troubleshooting equipment and software issues to ensure consistent and accurate data collection
  • A high level of precision in observation, documentation, and reporting to support construction quality and pavement evaluation

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Outdoor, hands-on work in all weather conditions
  • Lifting and carrying 40-50 lbs. of materials and equipment
  • Safely handling field tools and maneuvering equipment on active construction sites
  • Working outside normal business hours and traveling out-of-town and possibly overnight for assignments as needed
