Position Summary
This position performs maintenance on existing electrical systems and installation of new electrical work to meet the needs of the university. Tasks include performance of preventive maintenance, repair of damaged and worn out systems and devices, and connection of equipment to electrical circuits. Work also includes installation of new wire ways, circuits, and devices.
Additional duties as department Team Leader include planning & organizing daily workloads for shop personnel, interacting with Facilities Management on goals & objectives, maintaining the work order system on a departmental level, placing and reviewing parts & materials orders, and other duties as directed by the Trades Manager.
This position will also be responsible for limited high voltage inspections, diagnostics & repairs dealing with main sub-station, building transformers, PME & Vista switches. Duties also include basic maintenance, visual and operational inspections on multiple standby electrical generator automatic transfer switches. Position occasionally provides support and assistance to other trades including Automotive, Locksmiths, Carpenters, HVAC, and Painters.

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification.
Preferred Education/Experience/Skills

  • The preferred candidate will have a high school diploma.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated progressive experience in the installation, maintenance, trouble shooting, and repair of electrical equipment and systems, including ability to read electrical diagrams.
  • Prefer at least one to two years of formal technical training or education. Minimum of five years of experience in electrical systems installation & repairs and knowledge of State building code related to electrical construction is highly preferred.
  • State of NC Electrical Electrician's License is highly preferred.
  • Proven experience in repair, troubleshooting, maintenance, and service of standby electrical generator automatic transfer switches is also highly preferred.
  • A maximum of thirty minute response time to UNC Asheville main campus.

Work Schedule and Hours
Typical hours are Monday through Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm with one-hour lunch break between 11:30am and 12:30pm. The employee in this position must be available to work additional hours on evenings, weekends, and holidays when requested. This position is subject to Emergency Call Back to the work site on short notice, if available. Employee should be able to return to UNC Asheville within 30 minutes of call. The employee will receive compensatory time for Emergency Call Back according to UNC Asheville policy. Although unlikely, the Department Head/Supervisor will notify the employee in the event that he/she needs to serve in on-call status and the employee would be compensated according to policy guidelines.
