The Senior Director of Sustainability & Product Stewardship sets the strategy and processes by which Baxter will advance our commitment to the delivery of Sustainable Healthcare.

This role provides senior leadership for developing and advancing Baxter's global product stewardship and sustainability, including strategic leadership for governing policies, sustainability goals, and other related programmatic activities in alignment with company Sustainability program, including projects oversight, support, data management, tracking, reporting and goal modeling.

This position is responsible for overseeing key sustainability mandatory & voluntary reporting elements in coordination with business commercial functions, finance and legal teams and effective management of internal and external resources in support of those activities.

This position also directly supervises segment based and central teams dedicated to the launch of Baxter's customer-focused sustainability program as well as compliance related environmental and social programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Global customer engagement connecting Baxter's Sustainability strategy with customer needs, including the development of industry leading sustainability product and service portfolio, a portfolio of low carbon products, digital solutions, and circular programs to reduce embodied and operational carbon.

  • Leadership of the Baxter Product Stewardship and Sustainability vision, strategy, setting of near and long-term commitments, and execution of annual targets.

  • Leadership of life cycle analysis (LCA) program to identify opportunities for carbon and waste reduction and build sustainability and product stewardship principles from product development to product use.

  • Responsible for environmental and social regulatory programs including monitoring for and internal communication of the current state of global regulatory schemes and implementing programs to prepare for and implement compliance, including conflict minerals, chemical compliance, material compliance, and human rights.

  • Serve as a key leader on Baxter's Sustainability Leadership Team, responsible for the successful execution against annual sustainability targets and developing the path to achieving five- and 10-year commitments.

  • Chair of our Product Stewardship Council and key liaison to Baxter's cross-functional Sustainability Steering Committee, comprised of global senior leaders across the business.

  • Cultivate relationships across the enterprise, including procurement, segment business teams, EHS, operations, communications, finance, legal, and marketing; and through external engagement to ensure delivery of Sustainable Healthcare products and technologies to our customers and the industry.

Qualifications

  • 10-15 years professional experience with a minimum of 7 years of leadership experience; preference of experience leading and managing a sustainability function

  • Bachelor's degree in business or engineering discipline from an accredited university or college

  • Strong relationship building acumen; ability to understand, articulate and engage on multiple priorities at all levels across a large global/regional organization, and ability to build and maintain relationships with a diversity of external stakeholders

  • Comfort in leading in a matrix environment and possessing the skill to address and influence a range of functions and diverse businesses and interact with individuals at all levels within the organization

  • Excellent leadership, management, organizational, time and project management skills; strong analytical and problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to drive change and achieve results

  • Understanding of core sustainability business practices, including but not limited to carbon and energy management, circular economy, product eco-design, sustainable supply chain practices, diversity and inclusion, and community relations

  • Experience managing/driving environmental programs in support of sustainability goals

  • Strong business acumen

  • Possess a working knowledge of related disciplines/other functions including R&D, legal, compliance, finance, manufacturing and supply chain

  • Green or Black Belt certification preferred

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS or BA degree required

  • Preference for a master's degree in business administration, environmental science, sustainability and/or professional certifications that demonstrate relevant subject matter expertise highly preferred

  • Demonstrated program and project leadership skills to successfully achieve sustainability goals in a global company context including broad familiarity with Sustainability concepts

  • Ability to influence and interface effectively with site/regional/corporate leadership teams as well as organizations outside Baxter including a variety of external trade associations and membership groups

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $224,000-$308,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, commission, and/or long-term incentive.
