STATUS: REGULAR FULL TIME / NON-EXEMPT

SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Corps Ministry Specialist is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic oversight, coordination, and execution of The Salvation Army's operations in support of the direction set by the Corps leader and Divisional direction. This includes supervision of corps staff, community programs, spiritual development initiatives, mission integration, and the alignment of operational activities with the mission of The Salvation Army. The Corps Ministry Specialist serves as a key advisor to the Corps Officer and ensures ministry excellence, operational effectiveness, and compliance with Salvation Army standards and values. They will work with the Corps Officer and other ministry staff to ensure that we as a ministry team meet the needs of all our church members, as well as reach out to the community. This position, alongside the Corps Officer, will be responsible for recruiting, training, and equipping volunteers to support the ministries of the Yakima Corps.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must:



  • High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in ministry or related field preferred. On the job experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  • One year's experience teaching or working with all ages in an education or ministry environment preferred.
  • One year's experience in program development, leadership and volunteer management preferred
  • Two years of employee supervisory experience required.
  • An understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army's mission, philosophy, programs, and practices is preferred
  • The ability to share and communicate about the tenants of The Salvation Army.
  • Be at least 21 years of age, possess a valid WA state Driver's License with the ability pass The Salvation Army motor vehicle report

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Duties:



  • Keep open communication with Corps Officer.
  • Coordinate any driver or vehicle needs
  • Develop and maintain ministry calendars, program schedules and special events.
  • Create social media posts weekly, monthly calendars for corps & senior programming, flyers, and quarterly newsletters.
  • Assist in planning with worship services, Bible studies, and Corps events.
  • Ensure ministry programs comply with Salvation Army policies, safeguarding Protect The Mission child protection standards, and safety procedures.
  • Oversee the Pathway of Hope training and execution. Serve as the Yakima lead trainer for Protecting The Mission child safety requirements.
  • Recruit and oversee volunteers ensuring background checks and training are completed before volunteer begins assignment.
  • Drive to complete errands, to pick up supplies and / or program participants.


  • Direct Employee Supervision:


    1. Supervise assigned employee positions and volunteers,
    2. Ensure training is in partnership with other Divisional Departments such as Development and Human Resources.
    3. Responsible for adhering to Salvation Army policies regarding employee leadership, management and development including areas of performance management, safety, time and attendance and training.



  • Assist with seasonal events.



Program Development:



  • Coordinate pastoral care & visitation.
  • Plan and implementation of quarterly events.


  • Follow and ensure Protect The Mission child and vulnerable adult protection policies of The Salvation Army are followed.


  • In coordination with the Corps Envoy, help develop ministry strategies and plans in alignment with The Salvation Army mission.
  • Lead operational planning and performance reviews to improve ministry outcomes and community impact


  • Provide leadership and support to Corps Envoy and program coordinators to ensure spiritually grounded and effective service delivery.
  • Oversee ministry program implementation, including worship, discipleship, outreach, and pastoral care activities.
  • Ensure that all ministry programs are aligned with Salvation Army tenants, values, and community needs.
  • Promote a culture of spiritual integrity, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Monitor and ensure operational efficiency across all Corps and Social Service programs.
  • Foster spiritual formation opportunities for staff and volunteers, encouraging a Christ-centered organizational culture.
  • Represent The Salvation Army in community and interdenominational settings, strengthening partnerships and mission awareness, including driving to appointments, meetings or community events.
  • Serve as a spiritual leader and ambassador of The Salvation Army's holistic ministry.
  • Perform other work-related duties, as assigned.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:



  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer.
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  • Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
  • Ability to understand written information.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must be 21 yrs of age or older.



Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there are little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomfort associated without noise, dust, dirt and similar.

Work Schedule / Location:

Weekly work schedule is based on programming. In-person at The Salvation Army Yakima Corps with occasional offsite events including overnight events/conferences.

Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.

Paid Vacation:



  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time.


Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
