Job Summary

Are you looking to expand your career within the financial aid department at Maricopa? Well then this opportunity is for you.

The Student Services Specialist, who reports to the Student Services Analyst, plays a key role in supporting students and families through the financial aid process. You'll take on technically complex financial aid processing, resolve challenging problems and inquiries, and may oversee specific aid programs. This position also carries significant responsibility for counseling students and parents on financial aid options, while ensuring smooth office operations and the consistent application of policies and procedures.

Applicants must be in good standing with all U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid programs and must be eligible to access the federal systems and websites necessary to perform the responsibilities of this role.

Essential Functions

35% - Process financial aid applications, including verification, determination of need, disbursement of financial aid, and awarding of funds as well as editing of previous awards. Assists students with the financial aid process from initial application to award; reviews student files verifying application for accuracy and completeness; counsels students and parents with difficult inquiries, may evaluate and take action on student appeals, and may speak with student groups regarding financial aid availability and procedures.

25% - Requests additional information in compliance with federal and state laws. Assists in analyzing/interpreting regulations for financial aid programs and responds to inquiries requiring detailed knowledge of regulations and policies; creates various reports on a regular basis.

20% - Assist with the frontline service area to ensure accurate and consistent service to students and parents.

10% - May administer financial aid programs such as student employment, loan programs; providing requested information and reviewing/documenting office practices and procedures.

10% - May assist in training and oversight of students, and temporary workers; performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in business administration, education or directly related field, and one year of full-time equivalent student services or college teaching experience or experience assisting with educational program development and coordination, student advisement, financial aid, customer service, or related student development programs.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

1. Two (2) or more years of experience performing financial aid transactions such as awarding and professional judgement, requiring a high level of technical knowledge and expertise.
2. Two (2) years of experience collaborating and training others on financial aid processing.
3. Two (2) years of experience working in a Financial Aid Office that processes Title IV financial aid.
4. One (1) year of experience providing customer service support to students, faculty, and the general public via phone, email, or online platforms.
5. College degree in a related field such as education, business or accounting.

Special Working Conditions
  • Must not be in default or owe an overpayment of federal financial aid funds.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.
  • Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D driver's license is required; must meet

  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense.
