Internship, Electromagnetic Design & Modeling Engineering, Motor Design (Winter/Spring 2026)

Tesla Motors, Inc.
20.00 - 55.00 USD
paid holidays, sick time, 401(k)
United States, California, Palo Alto
Sep 17, 2025
What to Expect

Consider before submitting an application:

This position is expected to start around January 2026 and continue through the Winter/Spring term (ending approximately May 2026) or continuing into Summer 2026 if available and there is an opportunity to do so. We ask for a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site, for most internships. Our internship program is for students who are actively enrolled in an academic program. Recent graduates seeking employment after graduation and not returning to school should apply for full-time positions, not internships.

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

The Internship Recruiting Team is driven by the passion to recognize and develop emerging talent. Our year-round program places the best students in positions where they will grow technically, professionally, and personally through their experience working closely with their manager, mentor, and team. We are dedicated to providing an experience that allows the intern to experience life at Tesla by including them in projects that are critical to their team's success.

Tesla is seeking a motivated engineering intern for research and development of electric motors. This team is critical to the development of high-performance, high efficiency, and low-cost electric powertrain for Tesla's current and future electric vehicles. This person will be working with the motor research team to improve modeling accuracy of electric motor losses and flux, design & optimize electric powertrain, develop test plans and perform measurements in the dyno lab.

You will be joining a team of mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic engineering disciplines in a highly collaborative environment.

What You'll Do
  • Develop in-house electric motor design tools, combine finite element and analytical model to capture the motor flux linkage and losses

  • Traction motor design, use our design tools to evaluate large population of motors to derive the optimal powertrain system for electric vehicles

  • Motor dyno loss characterization and fault characterization

  • Evaluate new magnetic materials and innovative technologies, and apply them to improve motor design and manufacturing

  • Support new motor development, collaborate across teams for motor validation and reporting

  • Support production expansion, evaluate new materials and new manufacturing technologies

  • Develop motor control simulation model and support motor control firmware

  • Create simulation model for thermal model development and system engineering

What You'll Bring
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Systems Modeling, or a related field
  • Strong mathematical and physical understanding on electrical machinery

  • Proficient in CAD, CATIA preferred

  • Experience in drafting 2D drawings with GD&T

  • Experience with FEA, ANSYS preferred

  • Experience in MATLAB, Python, or equivalent tools for modeling and analysis

  • Knowledge on motor thermal modeling& motor control theory

  • Experience on electric motor loss characterization

  • Exposure in NVH analysis in electric motors and drive unit, rotor structural analysis, magnetic materials, and finite element model development
