Under the direction of the Science Director, SeaDoc Society, UC Davis (072072-VM: Wildlife Health Center), this position provides leadership in organizing, funding, and conducting research associated with the health of the Salish Sea Ecosystem. The veterinary scientist will develop and execute a plan of engagement with decision makers to get science into their hands. This includes, but is not limited to US and Canadian State, Provincial, and Federal elected officials, Washington Fish & Wildlife Commission, and other natural resource decision making agencies.
They will serve as an ambassador for the program and be actively engaged to build donor and sponsorship base of the organization
As needed, this scientist will assist with teaching and public service activities as part of the One Health Institute (OHI) and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM).

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position
- Washington State Veterinary license or ability to acquire one within 60 days of hire.
- US Federal Drug Enforcement Agency Controlled Substance Registration Certificate or ability to acquire within 60 days of hire.
- Position requires a Washington State Driver's License.
- Bachelor's degree
- Veterinary degree from an accredited University Motorboat Operators Training Course or the ability to secure this within 90 days of hire.
- Experience using personal computers and software programs (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and email programs), as well as larger databases.
- Experience writing and managing grants and contracts and prior experience constructively engaging decision makers.
- Strong conservation research and publication record.
- History of working in the field of wildlife and ecosystem conservation History of working in the field of wildlife and ecosystem conservation.
- Demonstrated experience analyzing data, writing manuscripts and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
- Organizational skills and flexibility to adjust workload, responding to diverse and changing deadlines.
- Advanced skills in diplomacy, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills and skills needed to work as a team member.
Preferred Qualifications
- First Aid, CPR, and AED Training or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
- Graduate Degree (MSc or PhD).
- Experience managing research operations that include multiple personnel and agencies.
- Experience managing field operations safely, taking into account changing conditions of weather, wind, wave, or currents.
- Knowledge of complex Salish Sea governance overlay including US State Federal, Canadian 4. Provincial and Federal, Tribal and First Nation, County governments, etc.
- Knowledge of marine animals including invertebrates, fishes, seabirds, and mammals.
