Job Description:

  • The primary purpose of this position is to perform tasks to support the laboratory technical staff in the areas of specimen procurement, specimen processing. The laboratory serves mentally ill adults, geriatric, forensic, and civilly committed patients in the types and ages of patients served.
  • Prepares and logs specimens to be sent to the referral laboratories.
  • Makes first morning and other emergency blood collecting rounds to the assigned units
  • Performs venepuncture with proficiency without supervision, accurately labels specimen and distributes these specimens to the appropriate sections to ensure specimen integrity.
  • Maintains phlebotomy area and trays with ample supplies and in a clean and safe condition. These include monthly inventories.
  • Follow test requirements of reference laboratory and procure appropriate specimen for testing and processes lab specimens using prescribed laboratory guidelines.
  • Assists in disposing of all laboratory wastes following OSHA and lab guidelines.
  • May assist clerical staff in reception areas of the laboratory. Answers incoming phone calls and routes to appropriate lab staff.
  • Able to utilize lab computer system to retrieve patient census.
  • Able to utilize centrifuges to process specimens and prepare them for testing.
  • Receives requested stock items, label and distributes them to the appropriate place within the laboratory.
  • Adheres to established safety, dress code and hospital policies along with Federal, State and JCAHO regulated compliance issues.
  • Schedule and correlates blood work for medication level with pharmacy.
  • Operates and performs proper maintenance of equipment.
  • Follows all laboratory procedures and utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment.


Controls exercised over the work:

  • Work is performed according to established written Hospital and Laboratory Policies and Procedures under the general supervision of Medical Technologist.
  • Employee completes all aspects of the work independently but is expected to inform the supervisor when unforeseen events or circumstances require significant changes or conflict with policies, procedures, established standards, or laws. However, if and when supervisor(s) is not available inform Administrator of Medical Services Unit.


Work conditions:

  • Be available and accessible by telephone during regular working hours (6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday) and possible after hours, weekends and holidays. May be asked to work extended hours.
  • Complies with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
  • Laboratory environment.
  • Frequent contact with water and biohazardous body fluids.
  • The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend over to perform phlebotomy duties. Occasional carrying, pushing and pulling of objects.


Required licenses and certificates:

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification by accredited organization (i.e. ASCP) preferred.


Equipment to be used:

  • Laboratory equipment, personal computer, facsimile machine, copy machine and other office machines.


Required Skills:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information one-on-one to clients and employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to carry out simple one or two step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
  • This position further requires the ability to handle with tact and patience and withdraw blood from patients who are mentally disturbed.


Required Education:

  • Graduated from accredited phlebotomy program preferred. High school diploma or general education degree (GED).


Required Experience:

  • Must have a minimum one (1) year of experience.


Minimum computer software skills/knowledge:

  • Microsoft Word and Excel.
