Primary Purpose of Position |
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Serving as the senior academic leader of the University, the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs reports to the Chancellor and serves as a key member of the Chancellor's cabinet. The Provost is responsible for providing leadership and direction for all academic programs and works closely with internal and external constituents to promote academic quality and achievement of strategic outcomes.
The successful candidate will be resourceful, imaginative, and forward-thinking, with a record of collaborative academic and administrative oversight. An earned doctorate or other terminal degree is required, as is a record of scholarship and teaching commensurate with appointment to the rank of full professor. |
Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
North Carolina A&T is a public, land-grant doctoral research institution and has been the largest historically Black university in the country for the past decade. With 15,275 students, the university offers 61 undergraduate degree programs, 35 master's programs, and 14 doctoral programs. It is America's top producer of Black graduates in Engineering, both at the bachelor's degree level and overall, and in Agricultural Science. It is also a top-five producer in numerous additional disciplines, including Liberal Arts and Communications/Journalism (both No. 2), No. 3 in master's degrees awarded to Black graduates in Engineering Technologies and Related Fields, No. 4 in master's degrees in Engineering and No. 11 nationally among "Best Business Schools for Women."
North Carolina A&T's academic structure consists of nine colleges and two schools: College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, Wille A. Deese College of Business and Economics, College of Education, College of Engineering, John R. and Kathy Hairston College of Health and Human Services, College of Science and Technology, Graduate College, Honors College, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and School of Nursing.
Located in Greensboro, a city of more than 300,000 residents, A&T lies in the center of North Carolina, a short drive from Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Chapel Hill, and key points of economic and scientific development, such as the Research Triangle Park and the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite. It is also a short commute to both Atlanta and Washington, D.C., via service from the Piedmont Triad International Airport. |
Minimum Requirements |
The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate with a record of effective teaching, scholarly productivity, and service that provide support for an appointment at the senior faculty level. The candidate must also present evidence of progressive accomplishments and a proven record of leadership, teambuilding, management, budget planning and control, and resource development. The selected candidate will have a comprehensive strategic vision, a demonstrated commitment to excellence, and ability to utilize innovative methods for implementing strategic plans. The candidate must be an engaging professional who is courageous, has a discernible history of probity, and an expressed commitment to value-based decision making. The successful candidate will be an energetic, engaged, collaborative, decisive, and respected leader and communicator who is fundamentally committed to advancing the university mission as a leading institution of higher education and research. |

While no one candidate will embody every quality, the successful candidate will bring many, if not all of, the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:
- An earned doctorate from an accredited institution in one of the disciplines represented in the University;
- Teaching, scholarly, research/creative activity, and service credentials meriting appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure;
- A minimum of five years in academic leadership roles in a university setting, preferably at an institution that grants doctoral-level degrees;
- A demonstrated commitment to demographic and disciplinary diversity;
- A demonstrated commitment to the teacher-scholar model for faculty members;
- Demonstrated commitment to shared governance;
- Demonstrated success in organizational leadership;
- Experience working with a variety of constituencies to create and support mutually beneficial partnerships, development opportunities, and/or other externally-focused initiatives;
- Experience working with complex academic budgets;
- Highest standards of integrity and ethics, even under challenging circumstances;
- A fair, collaborative, and transparent leadership style that will engender trust among all members of the NCA&T community;
- The ability to communicate well and work cooperatively and effectively with administrators, faculty, students, staff, and other external stakeholders; an appreciation and understanding of the need for collaboration and synergy among these groups to make critical decisions on academic priorities and the allocation of resources;
