Position Summary: The Engineer is an exempt position, which performs both semi-skilled and skilled duties. This person is responsible for creating product designs and/or developing sample product to meet pre-qualified specifications as provided by Encon Management, Sales or Marketing (Brand Management) members. Under the direct management of the company General Manager or Engineering Manager, the Engineer uses technical descriptions, sketches and verbal direction to develop, design or draft actual or conceptual product. Daily the Engineer will use knowledge of material qualities and properties, material standards, industrial processes and manufacturing procedures to complete this job. The assignments are project and/or product specific and measured on an effort-by-effort basis. This person is responsible for creating product designs and/or developing sample product to meet pre-qualified specifications as provided by Encon Management, Sales or Marketing (Brand Management) members. This person would best be an experienced Mechanical Engineer with a strong electrical background, or vice versa, but not limited to either of these disciplines. Experience with the design and manufacture of fluid pump systems would be beneficial. Responsibilities: Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design system layout and packaging with focus on DFM and Cost sensitivity to include finding solutions to design issues that impact product quality.
- Generate complex drawings and 3D models of system and product per specifications
- Review or interpretation of engineering plans and diagrams provided by others to determine correct component orientation and material lists for incorporation into Encon produced product.
- Ensure compatibility of Encon designs or specifications by providing input to internal customers to offer comment for manufacturing or construction activities.
- Create details for pressure vessel, structural skid, and piping layout and associated structural assemblies.
- Research product design, capabilities, and compatibility ranges as required and directed by the manager.
- Identify design flaws and recommend workable solutions and construction modifications, always ensuring quality of drawings and functionality of equipment.
- Draw rough sketches or arranges finished drawings or designs to illustrate specified materials or component assembly sequence into an overall design
- Interpretation and application of ASME, ANSI, ISO and CSA standards. This will include research of industry standards, governmental regulations, certifications and certifying bodies as designated by manager.
- Ensure that Encon products as designed, produced and evaluated are to appropriate standards, and that they meet target market and customer expectations.
- Review various resources and prepares analyses or summaries.
- Maintain the Master Written Specification File within Encon Safety Products for all emergency shower and eyewash components and assemblies.
- As needed and designated by the manager, support the need for, and completion of, third party product and process testing and approval.
- Perform calculations to evaluate and analyze prototypes and design concepts.
- Generate and review mechanical and electrical designs for new product parts, subassemblies, assemblies and systems configurations.
- Work closely with Product Management, Customer Service and Engineering Department members to translate product and customer requirements into technical specifications and conceptual designs.
- Acquire measurements and complete as-built drawings for finished products.
- Teams with appropriate members to have technical documents, manuals, bulletins, brochures, publications, training manuals and special reports created and accessible to company members.
- Prepare BOM (Bills of Material), specifications and change notices (ECN)
- Excellent interpersonal - verbal and written communication skills.Works with the New Product Development Team to ensure that reliability, ease of manufacturability and superior quality in the design of new products.
- Ability to participate as a member in product related cross-functional teams.
- Supports the New Product Development Team with first article inspection when assigned by manager.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required and assigned by the manager.
Job Qualifications:
- 7+ years (10+ preferred) related design/drafting experience.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline.
- Industrial electrical design experience with knowledge of NEC, CEC and European electrical standards.
- Knowledge of ratings and specifications of valves, fittings, tubing and equipment.
- Working knowledge of ASME Code Section I, IV & VIII, plus Piping Codes B31.1 & B31.3. ANSI, CSA and ISO standards.
- CAD/CAM: AutoCad & Autodesk Inventor or Pro-Engineer experience.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Inventor or Pro-E, P&ID and Microsoft Office Software required.
- Pressure Vessel and Structural Skid design and application experience is desirable.
- Self-starter with ability to multitask and work effectively with minimal supervision.
- Participate in meetings as required with various managers and vendors to ensure that specifications defined and understood before commencement of production of new products.
- Knowledge of fluid dynamics to include skidded pump packages preferred.
- Boiler Pressure Vessel code and Process Piping code knowledge and experience required.
