Department Summary

As the most-used service on campus and an essential component of education and research at the University of North Texas, the Libraries offer access to more than 6 million items (print and digital) along with expert personnel to assist patrons in achieving their academic and scholarly goals. We provide innovative programs and support to enhance the relationship between teaching and learning at the University of North Texas.

The Special Collections department collects and preserves rare and unique research materials for use by students, scholars, and the public. The department consists of five highly collaborative units; Digital Collections, Preservation, Processing/Description, Public Services/ Outreach, and University Archives. Special Collections offers unique experiences to students and faculty to engage with primary sources, rare books, arts, and artifacts. Faculty in a variety of disciplines including arts, humanities, and sciences schedule class visits to Special Collections each semester. Faculty also take advantage of coursework development grants to integrate Special Collections into curriculum, and research fellowships to further scholarly pursuits. As one of the largest contributing partners to The Portal to Texas History, Special Collections leads initiatives each year to digitize archival collections and preserve born digital archival content.

Position Overview

The University of North Texas is seeking an Archival Film and Video Specialist for a unique opportunity to fulfill licensing requests for moving image and photography collections held by UNT Libraries and assist in other duties related to ongoing digitization and digital access to archival film and video collections. The Archival Film and Video Specialist will work primarily with the NBC/KXAS Television News Collection, an archive of over 60 years of original television news programming. This position will work with filmmakers, curators, authors, and others to perform in-depth research to identify relevant archival materials, complete license agreements and collect licensing revenue. Additionally, this person will assist in performing quality control for digitized film and video footage, promoting the archive through social media and networking opportunities, and providing assistance to the Digital Archivist and Metadata Specialist on other relevant film and video projects. The Film and Video Specialist will work primarily at Willis Library in Denton, Texas, and may be required to occasionally visit library storage facilities in Denton. Under the supervision of the Head of Special Collections, the Film and Video Specialist may also participate in departmental initiatives such as workshops, instruction, digitization, and metadata creation as needed.

Work performed by the Archival Film and Video Specialist requires the ability to handle overlapping projects and requests. Candidates should have well-developed organizational skills, exceptional attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to manage time effectively.

Responsibilities:

* Communicate with patrons requesting licensing services, provide information regarding terms of agreements, licensing fees, method of payment, and other information as needed.

* Maintain accurate recordkeeping for license agreements, invoices, and fees collected.

* Generate invoices, negotiate fees, track payment of licensing fees and provide financial reports related to licensing as needed.

* Deliver full-resolution files to patrons.

* Interest in learning about film and video holdings within UNT Special Collections, interest in learning about the processes for archival film and video digitization and being trained to perform some of these tasks.

* Perform research for patrons seeking to identify relevant footage.

* Seek opportunities to expand the reach of the licensing program through marketing, partnerships, or other opportunities.

* Communicate with colleagues in other units within Special Collections to fulfill patron requests, and collaborate on effective workflows and processes

* Assists with other Special Collections projects as assigned, including preparation of large collections being digitized, metadata creation, and helping with workshops and special events.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and one year of related experience or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

* Highly detail-oriented with strong organizational expertise, meticulous attention to detail, and effective time management
* Strong multitasking and project coordination skills
* Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
* The ability to lift up to 30 pounds and utilize ladders and step stools

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience working in archives or Special Collections
* Experience working with analog and/or digital film and video
* Experience using video editing software
* Experience in television of film production
* Experience using project management software, like Trello
* Experience performing archival research and/or in-depth historical research
* Rich knowledge of local north Texas and regional history
* Customer service and negotiation skills
* Experience with archival digitization and metadata creation

Job Duties



  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all licensing requests and respond to all requests in a timely manner.
  • Draft project specific license agreements, route agreements for signature, and file completed agreements.
  • Assist with other archival film and video projects as assigned, including preparation of large collections being digitized, quality control, metadata creation, and helping with workshops and special events.
  • Perform quality control of archival film and video files returned from digitization vendors.
