Position Overview

The Associate Director, Technical Specialists leads the Technical Specialists team with a focus on strategic growth, innovation, and cross-functional alignment to align with laboratory key performance indicators and the long-term strategic plan. This role drives high-level initiatives, regulatory readiness, and leadership development across the lab.

Essential Duties

include but are not limited to the following:

Operational Leadership

  • Work collaboratively with laboratory operations leaders to direct daily, weekly, and monthly workflows to meet throughput and turnaround benchmarks.
  • Oversee lab operations to ensure Technical Specialists meet support needs and performance goals.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations (CLIA, CAP, OSHA, NY DOH, CLEP, etc.).
  • Collaborate with leadership on budget management, resource planning, and hiring strategies.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement and shares best practices across teams.

Team Management & Development

  • Supervise and develop staff through performance reviews, coaching, and engagement initiatives.
  • Identify training needs and ensure staff competency in all procedures and systems.
  • Support onboarding and workforce planning in collaboration with department leadership.
  • Lead with integrity, accountability, and vision to foster a high-performance, inclusive culture.

Process & Quality Improvement

  • Identify and resolve workflow and system issues in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Lead audits and quality reviews to drive lean and engineering-based improvements.
  • Maintain and update SOPs and job aids in partnership with the quality team.
  • Verify test and process performance characteristics with Lab and Medical Directors.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with stakeholders on lab needs including staffing, equipment, materials, and training.
  • Act as technical liaison for automation, LIS, and software projects from design to launch.
  • Manage technical development and support for lab tools (e.g., dashboards, scheduling systems).
  • Coordinate onboarding of new tests and clinical study handoffs into lab operations.

Education & Professional Growth

  • Collaborate with the Lab Director to develop and deliver continuing education for lab staff.
  • Participate in internal and external professional development programs.

Physical & Travel Requirements

  • Able to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physical tasks such as standing, bending, and reaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory/medical technology science or related field.
  • 9+ years of experience working in a clinical laboratory setting to include experience working with Quality Management Programs including strong knowledge of all laws and regulations that are required by CLIA, CAP, OSHA and other related legislative and/or state health departments and organizations.
  • 4+ years of experience leading and managing teams.
  • Experience and knowledge in the areas of laboratory technology and LIS management.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of project management experience.
  • Possession of ASCP certification and ability to maintain throughout employment in position.
  • 5+ years of experience with Laboratory Information's System (LIS) requirements development and system verification.
  • Lean 6 Sigma Certification.

Salary Range:

$103,000.00 - $183,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible.
