Description

Carnegie Mellon University's Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher to join a project focused on human collaboration with user interface agents. This research will explore novel ways to design, build, and evaluate intelligent systems that effectively partner with users.



The Postdoctoral Researcher will be responsible for conducting cutting-edge research on human-agent collaboration, with a focus on interactive systems and the design of AI. This person will also contribute to the dissemination of knowledge through scientific publications and engaging presentations. This role will report to Principal Investigators within the HCII.


Core Responsibilities:





  • Novel study and interactive system design, with associated qualitative and/or quantitative data collection, processing, and analysis.



  • Building interactive systems and prototypes to explore human-agent collaboration.



  • Conducting technical work in AI/ML, including fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) and exploring tool use.



  • Collaborating with faculty and students on research projects and publications.



  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students.



  • Presenting research findings at conferences and workshops.



  • Other duties as assigned.




Qualifications

Qualifications: Required




  • Experience in human-computer interaction, user interface design, and/or artificial intelligence.



  • Strong interest in human-agent collaboration, intelligent user interfaces, and the design of AI.



  • Substantive experience using qualitative and/or quantitative methods, including user studies, prototyping, and data analysis.



  • Demonstrated technical skills in building interactive systems and/or working with AI/ML techniques (e.g., fine-tuning LLMs, tool use).



  • Evidence of strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills in team collaboration settings.



  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.



  • PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Information Science, or a related field.




Desirable





  • Experience with accessibility research and design.



  • Experience with user research methods for AI systems.



  • Strong programming skills in relevant languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript).
