CORNEA FACULTY

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has a long-standing history of providing outstanding care for our patients, conducting leading-edge, collaborative research, and educating the next generation of ophthalmologists and vision science researchers.

The department is seeking an academically oriented cornea surgeon to join a team of established ophthalmologists and optometrists. Appointment rank may be at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level and to either the tenure track or clinical (non-tenure) track consistent with clinical experience and research interest and commensurate with experience. The position entails clinical and surgical activity at the University of Iowa Health Care university campus and Iowa River Landing as well as possible outreach sites.

The department currently supports 18 residents and 6 first year interns in the Ophthalmology training program, as well as fellowships in Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Inherited eye disorders, Glaucoma, Neuro Ophthalmology, Cornea, Oculoplastics and Surgical and Medical Retina. The department has multiple providers conducting clinical research strongly supported by a trials team and institutional resources. In addition to the trials team, the University of Iowa Institute for Vision Research is home to a world class team of scientists aimed at curing blindness through genetic and stem cell research.

Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check.

• Medical doctorate (MD) or equivalent medical degree from an accredited institution.

• Graduation from a fully accredited ophthalmology residency.
• Subspecialty training in cornea surgery.
• Demonstrated medical and surgical skills in ophthalmology.
• Demonstrated experience with resident and fellow training.
• Must be eligible to work in the US.

• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Iowa.
• Must be board certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology within 3 years of hire.

• Experience in clinical and/or basic science research.
• Experience and interest in teaching medical students and residents in the clinic as well as in the operating room.
• Experience with clinical research and quality improvement initiatives.
• Expertise in diagnostic and treatment of complex cataracts.
• Expertise in diagnostic and treatment of cornea conditions.
• Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
