Job Description

Responsible for providing customer service and functional supervision of Circulation, Reserve, and Shelving during daytime, evening, and weekend hours in the Health Sciences Library, including staffing the Service Desk and supervising student employees. Performs opening and closing procedures for the Service Desk and the library. Performs various tasks to maintain the stacks and public areas. Processes and maintains print reserve (permanent and course reserve). Assists with filling ILL requests. Maintains Textbook Guide.

Key Job Duties:
Circulation

  • Perform check out, check in, return receipt, renewal, create and update item records as needed. Route books to various libraries. Clear book drops daily.
  • Assist patrons with locating materials in the library.
  • Locate books, articles, journals and other materials in the FOLIO, Sierra, MOBIUS/OpenRS catalog, Discover@MU, WorldCat, etc. using a variety of search strategies. Determine availability of electronic and/or print copies, status, location, and estimated date of journal arrival.
  • Initiate item requests (holds, pages, recalls), check request status, and edit, cancel, or transfer requests as needed.
  • Assist patrons to place their own requests via ILL, OpenRS, Discover@MU, etc.
  • Assist patrons to view and renew items and cancel their requests. Give basic database instruction.
  • Conduct searches for missing items. Notify patrons of missing and found items. Update item status to missing in FOLIO as needed.
  • Maintain Reference statistics.
  • Make study room reservations.
  • Explain policies.
  • Respond to complaints about noise, overdue books, lost or damaged books and building problems. Forward complaints to Department Head or other staff as appropriate.
  • Assist patrons with log-in questions and other computer-related questions.
  • Assist patrons with printing, including PrintAnywhere.
  • Refer patrons to DoIT for printer problems.
  • Refill paper, toners, and cartridges, fix paper jams.
  • Report Circulation printer and computer problems to HSL computer support.
  • Assist patrons with their scanning and copying needs. Notify Department Head of equipment problems

Reference

  • Answer directional and basic to intermediate reference questions in person and by phone or email. Refer patrons and transfer calls to proper sources when necessary.
  • Assist patrons using databases, web resources and library catalog. Respond to ready reference, directional, and limited subject search questions.

Reserve

  • Locate physical and electronic reserve materials for patrons.
  • Take requests from faculty for materials to be placed on reserve.
  • Physically process permanent reserve additions and removals and update the FOLIO records. Send any items with a 'send for binding note' to Ellis Library Technical Services for hardback binding.
  • Replace old editions on permanent reserve with newer editions as they are acquired.
  • Physically process rush reserves, additions and removals to course reserves and update the FOLIO records.
  • Search for missing reserve items.
  • Add holds for reserve on items owned by other MU libraries as needed.

Student Supervision

  • Provide initial training or follow-up training as requested by Department Head.
  • Assign tasks, monitor, and evaluate performance.
  • Report student assistant problems promptly to Department Head.
  • Act as contact for student worker questions on nights and weekends.

Other Routine Duties

  • Shelve materials back into the collection. Route materials to Technical Services for Repair, remarking, etc. Perform shelf reading and stack maintenance.
  • Clear Hold Shelf daily.
  • Update Textbook LibGuide each term. Update other LibGuides as requested.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures for the library.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, and workshops.
  • Maintain orderly appearance of the library. Report building problems.
  • Assist new employees in learning job tasks.
  • Empty dehumidifier. Shred papers. Copy and stock forms.

Interlibrary Loan

  • Determine if HSL has the article/chapter requested.
  • Scan from HSL materials. Forward requests for UMLD or Vet Med materials to appropriate specialized library.

Periodic Duties

  • Shift stack materials. Assist with organization and with management of shifting projects.
  • Provide backup assistance with routine tasks in the absence of other desk staff.
  • Coordinate and implement emergency procedures for the library in response to warnings or in the event of actual emergencies.
  • Provide backup Circulation Desk coverage at other Specialized Libraries.
  • Assist new staff in learning job tasks.

Other duties as assigned

Shift

Shift hours will vary based on public hours.

Fall/Spring hours:
11am-9pm on Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays,
11am-6pm on Fridays, and
12pm-6pm on Saturdays.

Summer hours:
10am-8pm Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays
11am-6pm Fridays
12pm-6pm Saturdays

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of experience preferred with six months of library work experience.
  • Strong customer service skills. Demonstrate pleasant and professional demeanor. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully perform detailed work and effective organization, time management, and prioritizing skills.
  • Microsoft Office Skills required.
  • Strong sense of organization and attention to detail.
  • Discretion and attention to issues of confidentiality.
  • Library experience desirable, but not required.
  • Ability to move wheeled book trucks weighing up to 50 pounds; shelve materials in alphanumeric order; work at a desk and/or in front of a computer screen for up to 8 hours a day; withstand some exposure to mold and dust; easily traverse stairways.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $16.00 to $16.75 per hour

Grade: GGS-006
