JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State is searching for a full time Barn Worker - Milker - Grade 5 to join the team. Duties include:
  • Prepare and milk cows as directed or using standard operating procedures and report any unusual conditions to supervisor
  • Operate milking parlor, crowd gates, automatic doors and computer equipment used in daily cow milking operations
  • Clean and maintain milking parlor and milking equipment
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or Office of Physical Plant or make repairs
  • Milk cows by hand or with bucket milker if necessary
  • Perform animal management procedures including: grooming, washing, ear tagging, de-horning, branding, de-worming, vaccinating, moving, restraining
  • Collect milk, blood, fecal, urine and rumen fluid samples
  • Test milk for mastitis, take animals temperature, administer injections or treatments as directed by veterinarians, herdsmen, or written protocol
  • Lead, restrain, position and prepare animals for data collection, semen collection, hoof trimming, and surgical procedures
  • Detect and report abnormal conditions of animals
  • Detect and report estrus in breeding females and perform artificial insemination as directed
  • Maintain accurate records as directed
  • Maintain barns, outbuildings and surroundings in sanitary, presentable condition; remove manure and bedding by hand or by mechanical barn cleaner
  • Operate and maintain tractors, skid-steer loaders, manure spreaders, manure irrigation equipment, mowers, fertilizer spreaders, farm vehicles, trucks and livestock trailers
  • Construct, modify, repair and maintain specialized animal housing as required
  • Feed animals required amounts of grain and forage or milk as specified by standard operating procedure or experimental design; recover, weigh and maintain equipment in the feed center including; roller mills, TMR mixers, elevators, augers, feed carts, and silo unloaders
  • Assist in inventory, ordering and scheduling delivery and properly storing of feed, bedding and supplies
  • Perform general housekeeping and maintenance duties on all facilities and equipment
  • Direct work of self and assigned students and wage payroll employees in the absence of supervisors

Job Requirements: Requires the use of commercial English, grammar and arithmetic such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, including decimals and fractions; simple use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings, specifications, schedules, wiring diagrams, together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments, graduates and the like requiring interpretation in their various applications; or the posting, preparation, interpretation, use and checking of reports, forms, records and comparable data. 1 to 2 years effective experience.

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
