GAI Consultants is currently hiring a Survey Technical Manager1 to lead our sUAS group. The role will report out of our Pittsburgh, PA office and require up to 10% travel.

This position requires that the Technical Manager be fully competent in all generally accepted standards and conventional aspects and subject matter of the functional area of assignments. The Survey Technical Manager 1 plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard technical procedures, techniques, and criteria. The Survey Technical Manager 1devises new approaches to problems encountered and requires sufficient professional experience to demonstrate competence as a fully- trained worker and to be able to direct personnel as part of a project team.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities



  • Supervises, plans and directs the activities of land survey crews which include plane, geodetic and hydrographic, terrestrial and sUAS surveying.
  • Performs most assignments independently, with instructions as to the general results expected.
  • Receives technical guidance on unusual and complex problems and supervisory approval on proposed plans and work activities for projects.
  • Directs the procedures and processing of terrestrial and sUAS data.
  • May assist with land, right-of-way and location surveys, prepare legal descriptions, miscellaneous office calculations and perform field and construction surveys.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and cost estimates and become involved with client communication and development activity with direction and assistance from senior and principal supervisors.
  • Conducts training programs for employees in technical matters, proper work and safety
  • Acts as advisor on cases involving survey
  • Performs information and data processing related duties including using available statistical software packages or programs.

Responsibility for Direction of Others

The Project Surveyor coordinates or supervises the work of field and office personnel which may consist of surveyors, draftspersons, technicians, and other staff who assist in specific assignments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of land
  • Knowledge of the principles of civil engineering as it relates to
  • Knowledge of laws and state statutes pertaining to land surveying. Knowledge of modern land surveying practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern developments, current literature and sources of information in the area of land
  • Ability to plan and direct the work of technicians and clerical personnel in a manner conductive to full performance and high morale.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Must be a licensed sUAS pilot with a minimum of 7 years experience. A professional Survey license is not required for this position but encouraged to pursue. Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver License.


Professional Development



  • Participation in in-house survey training, loss prevention, and QA/QC programs, acquires knowledge of new technologies, and active participation in local professional affiliations and societies.

  • Serves as a Project Lead on midsize to large projects, well-rounded in consulting, industry standards and Company protocols, participation in professional societies and industry associations is preferred.

  • This individual has an advanced understanding of the survey profession including the technical responsibilities of the field and office track positions; should understand errors and their resolution and should also understand liabilities and client satisfaction.

Management Responsibility



  • Serves as Client Manager or Project Lead and participates in Business Development Initiatives; Oversees a budget for a department; Responsible for mentoring Assistant Survey Managers; Works with or directs others to interact with legal counsel to manage the contracts and other legal aspects of the projects and/or departments.
  • Serves as the lead of the project; receives administrative support and direction from Business Sector Leaders and higher-level officials of the Company.
