Summary:This position is reserved for Audiology doctoral students who are required to complete a full-time clinical externship in the fourth year of their program, similar to a one-year residency. They play a crucial role in supporting our clinicians in delivering high-quality patient care. The term of assignment is 1 year with placement in May or June.

Responsibilities:
General Extern Duties:
* Assist with behavioral testing in the sound booth for infants and young children-tasks typically handled by audiologists.
* Pre-program new hearing aids and verify their functionality before patient appointments, reducing face-to-face time and boosting clinic efficiency.
* Troubleshoot and repair hearing aids and earmolds, including performing minor in-office repairs.
* Process hearing aid repairs and verify programming before returning devices to patients.
* Organize and restock supplies in sound booths and hearing aid fitting rooms.
* Support clinicians with report writing.
* Prepare sound booths and hearing aid fitting rooms for patient visits, ensuring equipment is ready and disinfecting toys and furniture between appointments.
* Coordinate weekly tasks for junior students, including equipment calibration, sanitation, and listening checks.
* Manage voicemail and troubleshoot patient inquiries.
Pediatric Extern Duties:
* Assist in preparing sound booths and hearing aid fitting rooms, ensuring toys and furniture are disinfected between patients.
* Serve as test assistants during behavioral testing for infants and young children, enabling audiologists to handle more patients in a day/week by avoiding the need for two audiologists per pediatric patient.
* Support staff with mailing hearing aids and earmolds to patients.
* Manage hearing aid dispensary voicemail and email communications, addressing inquiries from patients, community contacts, and manufacturers.
Adult Extern Duties:
* Pre-program hearing aids for cochlear implant evaluations and verify their function to minimize appointment time and ensure best practices.
* Enter data into the cochlear implant database for research purposes.
*
Assist with completing Letters of Medical Necessity and Certificates of Medical Necessity for cochlear implant recipients.
* Ensure all new and upgraded cochlear implant parts are checked in, properly labeled, and prepared for patient appointments, including charging batteries and resolving any issues.
* Assist patients during our hearing aid walk-in hours by providing repairs and servicing hearing aids, which would otherwise require audiologists to handle during patient appointments.
