Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.
The Director of Business Data Solutions leads the organization's business-aligned data initiatives, overseeing a team of diverse data professionals responsible for data analysis, data governance, data quality, data analytics & enablement, and strategic data management. This critical role ensures that data is treated as a strategic asset across the enterprise, supporting the availability of high-quality, trusted and accessible data for business decision-making. The Director balances technical expertise and fluency in data management, governance frameworks, quality best practices, and analytics strategy with a people-centric leadership style that fosters team growth, collaboration, and accountability. This role partners closely with business, functional and technology leadership to continuously improve how data is defined, stewarded, accessed, and used. Additionally, the Director of Business Data Solutions will support the Data Governance Lead and is responsible for integrating governance and quality efforts into the broader data strategy and aligning efforts with organizational goals & initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Serve as a strategic leader and people manager for a team of data professionals.
  • Guide the definition and adoption of strategies, policies, processes and procedures related to data management, data governance, and analytics, to ensure efficient and effective data handling and utilization across the organization.
  • Oversee data quality initiatives and promote a culture of accountability for trusted, usable, and available data.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and mentoring, cultivating an inclusive team environment grounded in excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee the continuous improvement of operational data processes and capabilities, identifying areas for enhancement.
  • Participate in business & data analysis efforts to identify requirements, gather insights, and propose data & operational solutions to address business needs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and execute solutions that align with business objectives, ensuring seamless integration of technology and operational processes.
  • Establish key performance indicators and measurable outcomes to demonstrate the continuous improvement of data quality, operational efficiency, and data-driven decision making capabilities.
  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for data-related issues and initiatives, working collaboratively to resolve challenges and promote a culture of data excellence throughout the organization.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to understand their data needs and deliver data-driven insights and reporting capabilities.
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data management, data governance, business intelligence, and operations support, and proactively recommend new approaches to drive operational excellence.
  • Partner with IT teams to drive the maturation and adoption of data tools and technologies, ensuring they align with business needs and priorities.
  • Provide input and support for resource management, including workforce planning, talent acquisition, and skill development.
  • Collaborate both within and outside of the Business Data Solutions and Data Governance teams to drive organizational transformation and facilitate the adoption of data standards and best practices.

  • Proven experience in data management, data governance, business analysis, policy & procedure documentation, operational workflows, and self-service analytics.
  • Strong knowledge of data management practices, data quality standards, data governance frameworks, data stewardship processes, and analytics/business intelligence.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate governance, quality, and analytics practices into operational workflows, with a clear understanding of data as a strategic business asset.
  • Skilled in identifying opportunities to enhance operational efficiency and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience collaborating with data engineering or other IT teams on solution architecture, data pipelines, or data warehouse development, with working knowledge of data architecture concepts and their business applications.
  • Proficiency in SQL for querying, analyzing, and validating data across complex data environments.
  • Experience managing metadata, master data or reference data frameworks, and familiarity with modern data platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Databricks) and data governance tools (e.g. Informatica, Collibra, Alation).
  • Fluency in data visualization and self-service business intelligence tools (e.g. Domo, Tableau, Power BI) to support business insight delivery.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams and multiple levels of leadership, including conflict resolution capabilities.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to connect high-level vision with day-to-day execution.
  • Proven ability to deliver results with minimal direction while also recognizing when to seek guidance or assistance when facing complex challenges.
  • Exhibits agility and adeptness in managing multiple simultaneous tasks with competing priorities, embracing change and adapting to shifting priorities effectively.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • 10+ years of experience in managing and governing client data, implementing data quality improvement initiatives, analyzing data, and/or architecting data solutions, including ensuring systems and technology are properly aligned to support business needs.
  • Previous Supervisory experience required.
  • Experience in benefits or insurance industry is preferred.
  • Professional certifications in data management, data governance, business analysis, or related fields are a plus.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Management, Business Administration, Information Systems, Information Management, Computer Science, Mathematics, or other related fields preferred. Combination of education and experience considered

Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.
Limited Travel could be required. Travel conditions may vary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Currently, hybrid work environment, which requires working in CPG's office Tuesdays through Thursdays and flexibility to work remotely on Mondays and Fridays. Salary Range: $132,000 - $176,000
