Responsible for conducting a program of genetic testing, education and counseling for patients and their families.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Consults with and obtains detailed pedigrees from the patient and/or family members.
2. Investigates possible history of genetic diseases.
3. Identifies individuals with genetic risk.
4. Introduces and reviews basic genetic principles and patterns of inheritance.
5. Counsels patient and/or family members about genetic risk and reproductive outcomes.
6. Makes referrals for extended services when necessary.
7. Discusses genetic testing when appropriate and makes referrals to testing centers.
8. Records significant content of all discussions and documents summaries for medical records.
9. Administers genetic testing program.
10. Explains the advantages and disadvantages, current methodology, and accuracy of genetic testing.
11. Informs patient and other professionals of the protocols for genetic testing.
12. Acts as liaison between laboratories/clinics, patients, and referring physicians.
13. Establishes and maintains patient files and handles general correspondence.
14. Provides educational programs.
15. Prepares and conducts lectures, conferences, meetings, and departmental in-services.
16. Acts as an educational resource.

All responsibilities are essential job functions.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Master's degree in genetic counseling from an accredited program.
2. Board certified or full MA genetic counseling license to practice in Massachusetts.

Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Solid knowledge of genetics programs.
2. Demonstrated skill in analyzing problems and making decisions.
3. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
4. Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred:
1. Minimum of three years' experience.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
