GENERAL PURPOSE
A Furniture Finisher - Utility is a skilled craftsperson responsible for the final stages of furniture production. This role prepares, finishes, and protects wood furniture and parts to ensure a high-quality, aesthetically appealing, and durable product. The finisher carefully inspects and prepares surfaces, applies coatings such as stains, paints, lacquers, and varnishes, and ensures an even, consistent finish that highlights the natural beauty of the wood. Individuals in this role may rotate across finishing processes and assist other departments as needed, ensuring flexibility and support to meet production goals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Prepare wood furniture surfaces by sanding, filling, and smoothing to remove imperfections.

Apply finishes such as stains, paints, sealers, lacquers, and varnishes using brushes, sprayers, or other finishing techniques.

Inspect work to ensure consistent coverage, proper color match, smooth texture, and adherence to quality standards.

Maintain finishing tools, spray equipment, and work area in clean, safe working condition.

Safely handle and store finishing materials, following company safety and environmental standards.

Perform touch-ups, repairs, and refinishing work as required to correct defects or meet customer specifications.

Follow standard work methods and lean manufacturing principles to produce high-quality products on time.

Work cooperatively within the finishing team and with other departments to meet production and customer demands.

Adapt to different finishing processes and assist across operations as needed.

Participate in continuous improvement initiatives within the finishing department or cross-functional teams.

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned to support business objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience
One of the following is required: (1) High school diploma or its equivalent (GED for example), (2) work experience which demonstrates performance competency

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of wood finishing techniques, materials, and processes (sanding, staining, sealing, lacquering, varnishing, painting).

Competent in basic math skills (measurement, ratios for mixing finishes).

Ability to use and maintain hand tools, spray guns, and other finishing equipment.

Strong attention to detail and ability to recognize imperfections in surfaces or finishes.

Ability to match colors and finishes consistently.

Demonstrated ability to adapt to a continually changing environment and work in multiple areas of the finishing process.

Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Dependable, with a commitment to quality and meeting production schedules.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach with hands and arms for the duration of the shift.

Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs.

Required to talk, hear, and see with or without correction.
