Salary offers are based on the candidate's equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification. The position is eligible for overtime compensation for all hours worked over 40 in the designated workweek.

Mitigation Specialist play a vital role on the defense team; positively and enthusiastically working side by side with the attorney in developing and presenting mitigation factors and strategies for our defense cases.

We Require

  • Two years of paid casework experience within a criminal justice, social service, or court agency

  • Bachelor's degree in behavioral or social science

  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year-for-year basis

  • Valid Arizona driver's license upon hire

We Also Value

  • Paid casework experience within a criminal justice, public defender organization, social service, court agency or a probation department

  • Experience in an indigent defense environment

  • Participation with criminal justice proceeding

  • Skillsthat include identification of mental health symptoms, exposure to trauma, physical/neurological defects and/or drug/alcohol use

  • Past direct mitigation experience

Job Contributions

  • Interview client/family and interested parties to assist in the development of treatment/sentencing plans

  • Collect relevant social history records

  • Present and/or submit reports to courts and/or representing attorney to obtain the best possible sentencing outcome

  • Conduct assessments and conferences, attend case staffings; provide input regarding clients' needs; make suggestions regarding treatment and disposition

  • Make and monitor referrals to provide follow-up and intervention

  • Testify in court

  • Assess clients' social and medical histories, psychological evaluations, educational and legal documents

  • Locate residential treatment and outpatient treatment programs as a resource for clients

  • Arrange for client to be interviewed by agency and present summary of findings in court

  • Network with individuals and community agencies for access to social, educational, and employment resources for clients

  • Prepare correspondence, social histories, report and submit social histories to psychologists and attorneys

Working Conditions

  • Traumatic subject matters (crime scenes, accidents, etc.), frequent interruptions, time pressures, high volumes of work, and handling multiple, complicated, unscheduled, and frequently changing tasks

  • Accuracy, decision-making, concentration/vigilance, teamwork, working in close physical proximity with others, and public contact may be common occurrences

  • Ability to lift 15-25 pounds from the floor to waist; 15 pounds waist to shoulder or shoulder to overhead; carry 25 pounds 100 feet or push/pull 100 pounds 1000 feet

  • Work requires travel to and from job-related locations during a scheduled workday, subject to County policies regarding the use of County vehicles and/or private vehicles used on County business
