Summary:

The Laboratory Genetic Counselor provides genetic testing consultation and technical support to UNC Health System medical professionals including technologists, genetic counselors, physicians, and laboratory directors.

Responsibilities:

1.Genetic Testing Consultation: Provide genetic testing information to providers and laboratory staff regarding test utilization, test methodologies, test limitations and accuracy, potential testing outcomes, sample requirements, sample stability, interpretation of results, and follow-up recommendations. Be available to support ordering providers with test selection based on indication. Appropriately evaluate the significance of previous genetic testing results, their relationship to the clinical care of the patient, and their implications for additional genetic testing. Assist clinical genetic testing laboratories and/or genetic testing send-out departments with provider communication and consultation regarding appropriate genetic testing.

2.Laboratory Operational Support: Assist laboratory directors and managers in the development of policies and standard procedures related to laboratory testing, Epic ordering, CPT coding, and billing. Assist laboratory directors and managers in the evaluation of new reference laboratories to ensure CLIA licensure and appropriate test sensitivity and specificity, turnaround times, cost, billing practices, ease of use, and reporting. Provide specimen collection, processing and transport instructions for reference laboratory testing and ensure this information is incorporated into laboratory procedures. Assist with approved research studies. Resolve technical problems and answer questions related to ordering, collection, specimen volumes, processing, interpretation or result reporting in relation to genetic testing. Assist laboratory staff and directors with communication of abnormal results and any recommended follow up to providers. Review internal genetic testing orders to avoid redundant testing, ensure appropriate workup, and provide laboratory staff with any relevant communication and clinical information related to testing. Review results of reference testing, ensure that appropriate recommendations for follow-up are noted, and upload reports to Epic in a timely manner.

3.Quality Assurance: Assist laboratory directors and managers in identifying testing needs and in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives. Attend monthly Laboratory Quality Assurance meetings to assist laboratory staff and directors in developing quality indicators, reviewing specimen issues, and implementing quality improvements. Monitor test utilization across the UNC Health System to ensure cost effective testing strategy while maintaining testing quality and exceptional patient care. Participate in maintaining current laboratory test informational resources accessible to all staff throughout the UNC Health system and that clearly communicates necessary information regarding testing requirements, sample stability and processing, and acceptable volumes along with any specific guidance related to test utilization.

4.Education and Development: Remain up to date on all appropriate laboratory protocols. Maintain awareness of current best practices in laboratory genetic testing and professional guidelines related to testing recommendations. Develop educational materials, training guides, and procedures to meet the needs of laboratory staff, care teams, and providers. Participate in continuing education by providing lectures to laboratory staff or other medical professionals regarding current trends in genetics and genetic testing. Attend national, state, and regional genetics conferences to maintain awareness of current trends in genetic testing and methodology. Assist medical or laboratory staff in coordinating educational experiences for learners. Collaborate on professional manuscripts and presentations related to medical genetics and cytogenetics. Assist laboratory staff and Epic/Beaker staff with the development and implementation of interfaced orders to enable ordering of reference laboratory testing within Epic/Beaker.

* Master's degree in human genetics, counseling or related field.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) or American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) certification or board eligible.

* No prior experience is required.
