The opportunity

The IT Operations Monitoring Engineer, reporting to the AVP of Cloud and System Services, will ensure the efficient operation of Southern New Hampshire University's systems and infrastructure. You will monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to maintain high reliability. Your role will involve a blend of technical expertise and collaboration with several teams. At SNHU, the Operations Monitoring Engineer is the guardian of system health, tirelessly ensuring that the technology infrastructure runs, allowing the business to function. You can work remotely in any of our approved working states. #LI-Remote

What You'll Do:

  • Analyze system performance data to identify and address potential issues or anomalies.
  • Develop monitoring solutions using multiple monitoring tools like DataDog, Dynatrace, Splunk, AppDynamics, Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds, Open Text, Ansible, SCOM, or similar.
  • Respond to alerts and incidents, performing root cause analysis and implementing corrective actions to restore system functionality.
  • Improve logging systems and log analytics infrastructure.
  • Contribute to on-call rotations for 24/7 support of critical systems.
  • Resolve network errors and system malfunctions promptly.
  • Manage and escalate complex technical issues to relevant teams for resolution, documenting incident remediation activities.
  • Ensure system integrity and minimize downtime by responding swiftly to alerts and handling incidents.
  • Develop and implement automation scripts using languages like Python, Bash, and PowerShell to improve operational tasks and reduce manual effort.
  • Identify and address system bottlenecks and vulnerabilities to improve overall system performance.
  • Collaborate with development teams on deployment strategies and system architecture to ensure operational performance.
  • Create and lead scheduled Community of Practice for Monitoring
  • Create and lead scheduled Operations Monitoring Governance meetings
  • Use telemetry data to automate performance optimization and capacity planning.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for monitoring standards, processes, configurations, and procedures.
  • Create reports on system performance, incidents, and capacity, presenting findings to relevant partners, including IT Senior Leadership Team.
  • Oversee monitoring practices of all SNHU Tier 1 platforms to ensure they are observing the SNHU monitoring standards.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities and equipment performance for historical analysis and future improvements.
  • Collaborate with partnered teams, including IT, development, security, and management, to ensure observability solutions align with broader IT strategies and infrastructure requirements.
  • Communicate technical information to all partners.
  • Stay informed about industry trends and best practices to improve observability operations and introduce new features and enhancements.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency gains.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and team members to enhance their technical capabilities, including operational engineers across IT.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

What We're Looking For:

  • 6+ years of experience in systems monitoring, including developing strategies, infrastructure architecture, or a similar role, with increasing responsibility and complexity.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Engineering.
  • Experience with monitoring tools like DataDog, Dynatrace, Splunk, AppDynamics, Prometheus, Grafana, SolarWinds, Open Text, Ansible, SCOM, PagerDuty or similar is required.
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash, or PowerShell) for automation is often required.
  • Experience with network protocols, system architecture, and IT infrastructure.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization/orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) required.

Compensation

The annual pay range for this position is $91,388.00 - $146,247.00. Actual offer will be based on skills, qualifications, experience and internal equity, in addition to relevant business considerations. We expect this position to be hired in the following target hiring range $100,983.00 - $136,624.00.
