Your Role

As a Junior Data Engineer in the Gensler Research Institute, you will work closely with the Institute's team of researchers, data analysts, and communications professionals to implement and manage content in our data store, and to develop tools that allow Gensler practitioners to interact with the data. This includes building Tableau and/or Power BI dashboards as well as supporting the Institute's SharePoint library. This role's initial focus will be on major strategic initiative to assemble the database for major, exploratory research projects focused on the future of cities, workplaces, consumer experiences, etc around the globe.

In addition to working closely with the Institute's team, you will also work closely with Gensler's data platform and information technology teams to ensure tools and processes fully leverage Gensler's data infrastructure and are built for ongoing evolution and maintenance. Qualified candidates should be collaborative, flexible, self-motivated, quick learners, and have an entrepreneurial spirit.

**This position is based onsite 5 days a week out of either our New York or Washington, DC office.

What You Will Do

  • Design database schemas and collaborate with both internal engineers and external consultants to build out databases in our data store.

  • Design scalable ETL processes and data processing workflows and oversee their implementation.

  • Design processes and provide support to ensure data quality and maintenance.

  • Prepare aggregated data sources for reporting and create clear and attractive dashboards in Tableau and Power BI.

  • Help maintain GRI's SharePoint sites and related Power Apps tools.

  • Address questions and concerns from downstream data consumers

  • Work closely with researchers, analysts, and writers to make sure data tools and products clearly address their needs.

  • To the extent possible, provide advice and technical support related to our various research tools for other GRI members and Gensler practitioners.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, with 2+ years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in a related field.

  • Excellent programming skills in Python.

  • Experience working with relational databases writing high quality, maintainable SQL on large datasets

  • Experience with scalable ETL/integration pipelines using an enterprise level ETL/Integration tool like SnapLogic, Azure Data factory, Informatica, Talend, SSIS etc.

  • Intermediate/Advanced level skills in designing dashboards using Tableau and/or Power BI

  • Familiarity with NLP concepts such as sentiment analysis, tokenization, and embeddings

  • Effective communication, troubleshooting, and organizational skills and the ability to complete assigned work with minimal supervision

  • Strong behavioral skills including but not limited to problem-solving, work prioritization, communication, self-direction, and time management

  • Willingness to learn recent technologies and innovative ways of approaching projects.

  • High tolerance for messy data and processes

Preferred

  • Familiarity with GIS tools such as ArcGIS or PostGIS

  • Familiarity with a data blending tool like Alteryx

  • Experience with MS Azure cloud platform services including Azure BLOB storage, Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL database and Azure SQL Datawarehouse

  • Experience with Spark and/or Trino SQL

  • Experience using NLP tools, libraries, and models

  • R programming experience

**The compensation range for this role is estimated to be between $95-105k plus bonuses and benefits and contingent on relevant experience.
