Job Title: Medical Director

Location: Traverse City, MI 49686

Duration: 3 months to long-term

Shift: Standard shift (8hrs/12hrs/10hrs)

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the ultimate authority on all medical decisions for inmate health services.
  • Conduct weekly on-site medical clinic sessions.
  • Remain on-call 24/7 for urgent consultations and support.
  • Supervise and direct nursing staff, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols.
  • Develop, update, and approve:
  • Standing medical orders
  • Clinical protocols
  • Policies and procedures
  • Provide or oversee staff training on topics such as suicide prevention, overdose response, mental health issues, and general medical care.
  • Coordinate care with mental health providers, correctional officers, and off-site specialists.
  • Ensure full regulatory compliance with:
  • Michigan State Licensing Requirements
  • Jail Policies
  • NCCHC (National Commission on Correctional Health Care) Standards
  • AMA (American Medical Association) Guidelines
  • Review and maintain accurate medical records for all inmates.


Mandatory Requirement:

Licensure:

  • Must be currently licensed in the State of Michigan as one of the following:
  • M.D. (Doctor of Medicine)
  • D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy)
  • P.A. (Physician Assistant)
  • N.P. (Nurse Practitioner)
  • A copy of the current Michigan license must be provided.


Availability:



  • Must provide on-site clinic sessions weekly (frequency based on need).
  • Must be available on-call 24/7 to respond to urgent medical issues and support nursing staff.
  • Must ensure backup coverage (another physician or provider) when unavailable.


Oversight



  • Must supervise nursing staff on all medical matters.
  • Must develop and approve medical protocols, standing orders, and clinical policies and procedures.


Experience (Preferred):



  • Prior experience in correctional healthcare or institutional medicine is highly preferred.
