About the Job

The Disability Resource Assistant at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) is responsible for supporting the Disability Resource Center (DRC). This includes working one on one with a team member to proofread and edit a variety of correspondence and documents related to disability resources to ensure correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and style, as well as sending out communication from the DRC office. Our ideal candidate is strategic in presenting and supporting ideas to engage students in development activities on an ongoing basis and meticulous in reviewing copy, noting errors related to punctuation, spelling, accuracy, and word usage. This position reports to the Disability Resources Coordinator.

This position works in-person in Rochester, MN. This role is not eligible for H-1B or Green Card sponsorship.

Duties and Responsibilities

Access Assistant (80%)
* Reviewing and editing content for spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, and style.
* Verifying the accuracy of dates, statistics, and other referenced information.
* Verifying character count, tone, and ensuring it meets client-provided style guides.
* Suggesting edits and making changes using digital commenting and editing tools.
* Completing tasks in alignment with deadlines.
* Verifying that a newly formatted document doesn't contain rendering errors.
* Ensuring document or web layout is accurate and meets client expectations.
* Coordinating and scheduling testing accommodations for designated students.
* Coordinate the proctoring of exams and serve as the primary testing proctor.
* Assist with other projects and committees as assigned.
* Read and respond to department emails.
* Prepare all testing materials for proctored exams
* Read, oversee, and disseminate all accommodation correspondence to faculty and other related parties.
* Support the on-boarding of Accessible Information Management (AIM) an accessibility third-party software.

Support for Student Life (10%)
* Attend Student Life meetings and provide support related to disability resources and education

Support for Student Success Coach Suite (10%)
* Coordinate onboarding, scheduling, and supervision of student workers for the office suite.
* Administrative support as needed

Work Location and Schedule
This position is a full-time position which requires 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Work must be performed in-person on the UMR campus in accordance with the Work Location Guidelines.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and/or experience to equal four years

Preferred Qualifications
* Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, Journalism, Student Learning & Development, or the equivalent in related experience.
* 1 year experience support student learning and development to support educational, social, multicultural, and personal development (can be as an undergraduate)
* Experience that includes administrative, organizations, and budget management skills
* Understanding/experience working with Disability Resources.
* Experience working with and understanding cultural differences, commitment to diversity, and experience and sensitivity working with students from diverse backgrounds.
* Writing and editing: Knowing English language rules, revision techniques, and how to create effective written content. Proficient in basic and advanced grammar rules and understand how they are used within UMR guidelines.
* Computer proficiency: Use of digital tools to mark up and edit documents including Google docs and Gmail. Ability to adapt to different software, platforms, and tools.
* Attention to detail: Need to resolve every issue within a text, regardless of how small or significant it might be. Attention to detail is important to ensure content is both error-free and consistent throughout.
* Comprehension: Ability to comprehend both the content of what is being read and any style guides. Need to understand the client's vision and expectations to deliver high-quality work.
* Resourcefulness: May need to use different tools to verify the accuracy of the content. Need to feel comfortable working independently to use research tools, style guides, and knowledge to make suggestions or changes to improve the content.
* Multitasking: May need to manage multiple projects at once with the need to be able to multitask and prioritize effectively. Project requirements and deadlines can vary, so may need to shift between tasks frequently.
* Time management: Need to be able to complete tasks within a given deadline. This includes multitasking and prioritizing time commitments in collaboration with others across campus
* Ability to clearly and concisely convey complex information in a manner that others can understand, as well as ability to understand and interpret complex information from others

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.00 - $23.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience
