THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Juvenile Justice Intern, you will gain hands-on experience through on-the-job training that is specifically designed to develop your knowledge, skills, abilities, and work traits as a Juvenile Justice Specialist. Your work will include attending and successfully completing the Juvenile Justice Academy, which covers a variety of coursework related to professionalism and ethics, adolescent development and behavior, safety and security principles, group facilitation skills, effective communication, relevant Pennsylvania codes, CPR/AED and basic first aid, use of mechanical devices, suicide management and awareness, cultural awareness, fire safety, and search procedures. Throughout your work, you will receive direct and close supervision from a Youth Development Counselor Manger or other higher-level personnel who will assign your workload, provide guidance and direction, and review your progress.

  • Work hours and days will vary.
    • May change based on operational needs

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Internship Requirements:

  • You must be working toward a degree in Criminal Justice, Restorative Justice, Behavioral Sciences, Human Services, Social Sciences, Special Education, Child Development, or closely related field.
  • You must be a college junior or senior enrolled (or intending to enroll) in an accredited college or university with 12 or more credits for the fall semester.
  • You must have good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher).
  • You must be 21 years of age or older.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be willing to accept employment at Loysville Youth Development Center and commute to this location in Perry County.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements:

  • A conditional offer of employment will require a medical examination.
  • This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
    • Under the Law, a conditional offer of employment will require submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports including, but not limited to, PA State Police clearance, PA Child Abuse history clearance, and FBI Fingerprint clearance.
