ABOUT THE POSITION

Senior Highway Design Engineer - Transportation/Technology

Orlando, FL | Hybrid Work Environment

VHB is looking for an experienced Senior Highway Design Engineer to join our growing Transportation team in Orlando, Florida. This unique role offers a 50/50 split between traditional transportation design work and leadership within our Tech-Enabled Practice, driving innovation in model-based delivery, CAD automation, and digital workflows.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive FDOT project experience, strong technical design expertise, and a passion for enhancing team capabilities through digital transformation and process efficiency.

Responsibilities:

Transportation Design

    Lead and deliver complex highway and roadway design projects from planning through construction administration.
  • Develop roadway geometric layouts, grading, drainage, utilities, and permit packages following FDOT and local government standards.
  • Create and manage plan sets in compliance with the FDOT CADD Handbook, FDM, and project-specific scopes.
  • Oversee the development of 3D models using OpenRoads Designer; supervise corridor modeling and quantity calculations via Quantity Manager.
  • Prepare cost estimates, technical specifications, and project documentation for state and municipal clients.
  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams across transportation, drainage, traffic, and environmental disciplines.
  • Participate in public meetings and client presentations as a technical lead.

Tech-Enabled Practice Support

  • Lead implementation of model-based design workflows across Orlando transportation projects.
  • Serve as the Orlando lead for CAD/modeling teams, supporting day-to-day production and mentoring junior staff.
  • Partner with corporate teams to champion adoption of innovative tools and technologies (e.g., AI for design, digital twins, CAD automation).
  • Act as liaison between the Orlando office and regional tech leadership to support ongoing development in ProjectWise, MicroStation, and Bentley ecosystem platforms.
  • Conduct and lead internal model reviews, ensuring design fidelity and data integration for digital delivery (e.g., Item Types, Reports, Street Sheets).

Preferred Skills & Abilities:

  • Advanced proficiency in OpenRoads Designer, MicroStation, and familiarity with ProjectWise.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Capability to guide, mentor, and train junior staff in both transportation design and digital workflows.
  • Experience with AI/technology adoption, digital plan review, or other automation platforms in transportation.
  • Passion for problem-solving, team development, and continuous improvement through technology.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (MS preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida (or ability to obtain within 3 months).
  • 8-11+ years of professional experience with a focus on FDOT roadway/highway design.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering FDOT and/or municipality-led roadway improvement projects.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites and client meetings as required.
